India To Buy 200 Fighters: Defense Secretary

The acquisition of 83 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, and an additional 110 fighters to replace the Indian Air Force's (IAF's) fleet of ageing jets that had long been in the pipeline appears to have moved forward with Ajay Kumar, Defense Secretary of India, hinting at the projects advancing at an accelerated pace.

“The contract for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)- manufactured 83 LCA Tejas Mark 1A advanced fighter jets are in the final stages. It will definitely be signed this year,” Kumar said, during a ceremony held to commission two Indian Coast Guard Ships (ICGS) in Kolkata city, West Bengal state.

He added that the manufacturer HAL is set to double the annual production of Tejas jets. “With the design having being finalised, HAL will be ramping up production of the LCA mark 1A jets from 8 to 16 per year. If required, through outsourcing, we can further enhance it.”

In November, a senior IAF official had stated that the deal will be finalised in the “current financial year.” The contract maybe signed during DefExpo-2020 exhibition to held in India next month.

Additionally, New Delhi wants to buy over a hundred jets to supplement its depleting fleet of fighters. Lockheed Martin (F-21), Boeing (F/A-18 Super Hornet), Saab (Gripen), Dassault (Rafale), Eurofighter Typhoon and Mikoyan MiG-35 are in the race to bag the multi-billion worth order.

“Apart from these Expression of Interest (EOI) has been floated for another 110 aircraft, based on which Request for Proposal (RFP) will be floated,” he added.

"We want to do it as soon as possible," Kumar said, when asked whether a time frame has been finalised by which the new aircraft are to be acquired.

    NATO’s new surveillance drone begins test flights over the Mediterranean

    By: Sebastian Sprenger COLOGNE, Germany — The first of five new NATO surveillance drones began test flights over the Mediterranean Sea this month, nudging the alliance toward a new capability meant to relieve the demand for U.S. equipment. The flights took off from Sigonella air base in Sicily, Italy, the future headquarters of the Northrop Grumman-made Global Hawks of the Alliance Ground Surveillance program. The planes are owned by a collective of 15 NATO members. The alliance's supreme allied commander for Europe, a job currently filled by U.S. Air Force Gen. Tod Wolters, has tasking authority over the new capability. The North Atlantic Council also gets a say in cases of missions outside of NATO territory. The first two drones arrived late last year. Officials expect the rest of the fleet to make the trip from the manufacturer's facilities in Palmdale, California, throughout the summer. Earlier this spring, travel restrictions spurred by the spread of the novel coronavirus had raised the possibility of a delay in getting the initial plane approved for its flight schedule. But the Italian government allowed a team of Northrop specialists into Italy in late May for acceptance testing, a key step in obtaining an airworthiness certificate for the drone. “COVID-related delays ended up only being a few weeks, but nothing that significant,” Camille Grand, NATO's assistant secretary general for defense investment, told Defense News in an interview, referring to the coronavirus disease. “We are now moving to a pattern of regular flight to enable the force to use the drone.” Officials have been tight-lipped about exactly where they intend to use the aircraft once they are fully operational. “You can imagine missions of looking into the situation on NATO's borders,” Grand said. “Both in the south, in the Middle East or the east. The drones enable you to collect intelligence beyond your airspace.” While the initial aircraft has already completed at least one nine-hour flight over the Mediterranean Sea, it remains to be seen if the the aircraft can get clearance from Italian regulators to fly over land, where air traffic is more crowded and a mishap could be catastrophic. The general idea is to use the Italian airworthiness approval to fly anywhere. “The beauty of the European airspace is that once your are certified in Italy, you can fly across the European airspace,” Grand said. He noted that the certification currently in effect is provisional, and that the scope of the process is “likely to expand over time.” For now, high-flying military surveillance drones traversing the continent must obtain permission from national airspace authorities for a restricted flight corridor to protect nearby civilian traffic. Such is the case, for example, when U.S. unmanned aircraft fly reconnaissance missions close to the Baltics.     Daher annonce avoir reçu la notification de la part de la Direction de la Maintenance Aéronautique (DMAé) du contrat de maintien en conditions opérationnelles (MCO) pour la flotte d'avions TBM 700 relevant des forces armées françaises. Le contrat obtenu porte sur une flotte de 26 appareils : 23 TBM 700A et 3 TBM 700B, basés en France métropolitaine. Cette flotte est répartie entre 15 avions pour l'armée de l'Air et de l'Espace, 8 pour l'armée de Terre et 3 pour le centre d'expertise DGA-EV, le département Essais en vol de la Direction Générale de l'Armement. « Le ministère des Armées est un client exigeant qui nous a toujours poussé vers l'excellence, notamment dans des contextes critiques. Récemment nos équipes ont été mobilisées pour répondre aux besoins des forces armées françaises, dont la Gendarmerie nationale, impliquées dans la lutte contre la pandémie.     Collins Aerospace gets sixth order from U.S. Army for production of next-generation Manpack radios

    CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (July 23, 2019) – Collins Aerospace Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), has received its sixth order from the U.S. Army to provide PRC-162 software-defined ground radios for the Handheld, Manpack and Small Form Factor (HMS) program. This sixth order was issued under a multiple award contract that the Army awarded to Rockwell Collins and two other companies in 2016. The contract, which has a $12.7 billion maximum firm-fixed-price with an estimated completion date of March 2026, moves the Army another step closer toward modernizing communications on the battlefield. The PRC-162 is a two-channel ground radio, both man-portable and vehicle-mountable, that will enable the Army to tap into next-generation communications capabilities such as the Department of Defense's new Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) while maintaining interoperability with legacy waveforms.
