Vance’s plan to buy U.S.-made uniforms for Canadian military raises issues

My Postmedia colleague Christie Blatchford reports the Canadian military is looking for a new camouflage uniform for its 95,000 regular and reserve force members – potentially at a cost of as much as $500 million to taxpayers.

Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jon Vance favours one originally developed for the U.S. military, according to documents obtained by Blatchford.

In a seven-page briefing note on Vance's recent visit to Halifax, the general's senior staff officers last month wrote, “The CDS stated his desire to replace” current uniforms with the new “MultiCam” pattern now being used by the force's Special Operations Command.

As Blatchford wrote, except for special forces, most Canadian soldiers now wear “CADPAT,” short for “Canadian Disruptive Pattern,” a Canadian-developed digital camouflage print that comes in several varieties, depending on the environment (desert, temperate, Arctic, etc.) and for which the Canadian government has a copyright and trademark. The uniforms are manufactured by a number of Canadian companies.

    Rheinmetall Canada Awarded a Major Land C4ISR Program Support Contract by the Government of Canada

    The Government of Canada has recently awarded Rheinmetall Canada a major support contract pertaining to Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR). The frame contract is currently worth up to CAD 57 million. The contract will take place over the next five years and will be expensed using a task mechanism over this period. The goal of the ISTAR ISS contract is to provide the Canadian Armed Forces with an ISTAR Command and Control Information System (C2IS) capability. Rheinmetall Canada will maintain and enhance the specialized capability through the support contract.     La ministre de la Défense Anita Anand annonce l’amélioration des capacités de mobilité de l’ARC pour appuyer l’Ukraine et d’autres missions mondiales

    Le 26 septembre 2022 – Ottawa (Ontario) – Défense nationale/Forces armées canadiennes Aujourd'hui, la ministre de la Défense Anita Anand a annoncé que l'Aviation royale canadienne (ARC) améliorait ses opérations de mobilité aérienne basées en Europe alors qu'elle mène des missions continues dans cette région et dans le monde entier. Depuis la fin mars 2022, les membres de l'ARC qui exploitent deux CC‑130J Hercules aéronefs mènent des opérations à partir d'un centre situé à Prestwick, en Écosse. Le personnel du centre a maintenant livré 4 millions de livres de marchandises, principalement de l'aide militaire à l'Ukraine. Afin d'accroître la capacité et la souplesse opérationnelle, le Canada ajoute un troisième aéronef CC‑130J Hercules au détachement et déploie du personnel de soutien responsable de la maintenance, du transport des marchandises et de l'administration. Le détachement de mobilité aérienne de Prestwick sera composé d'environ 55 membres des Forces armées canadiennes, et ce nombre pourrait augmenter en fonction du rythme opérationnel. Au besoin, les équipages des CC‑177 Globemaster continueront d'utiliser les ressources du centre pour accroître l'efficacité et la souplesse des missions. Pour refléter ce changement, le détachement de transport aérien tactique de Prestwick sera désormais connu sous le nom de détachement de mobilité aérienne.     Barrett secures Canadian DND contract
