TORONTO — Magellan Aerospace Corporation (“Magellan”) announced today the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) with General Electric Aviation Canada (“GE Canada”) for the purpose of exploring an arrangement whereby GE Canada would support Magellan in establishing and delivering a Canadian-based sustainment solution for the GE F414-GE-400 engine, which powers Boeing's F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet fighter jet. This initiative is in support of Boeing's proposal to provide the Block III Super Hornet as a solution for Canada's Future Fighter Capability Project (“FFCP”). Under this MOU, with the selection of the Super Hornet for the FFCP, GE Canada and Magellan would develop an appropriate and competitive sustainment solution for Canada which would provide all aircraft engine sustainment services for the Royal Canadian Air Force (“RCAF”) on their F414 engine fleet. The in-country depot level sustainment support for the engines includes onsite maintenance, repair and overhaul (“MR&O”) support services, technical services, and engineering support and would be performed in Magellan's facility in Mississauga, Ontario for the life of the program. This engine sustainment work for Magellan aligns with the objectives outlined in Canada's FFCP ITB requirement and will continue to provide high-value, high-complexity jobs in Ontario, Canada.
GE Canada and Magellan have an enduring and mutually successful relationship that has spanned more than five decades. Magellan's Mississauga facility currently provides engine R&O and fleet management services for the F404 engine that powers Canada's existing fleet of CF-18 Hornet aircraft and is an approved source for F404 and J85 engine repair. Magellan's North American facilities, including Mississauga and Winnipeg, provide components for the F414 new engine manufacture and other GE engine programs. Magellan also has a longstanding relationship with Boeing and provides aircraft components to Boeing for all major programs including the F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet.

La firme a obtenu le feu vert de la Food and Drug Administration pour commercialiser son exosquelette L'entreprise B-Temia décroche les autorisations nécessaires pour commercialiser son exosquelette aux États-Unis et n'écarte pas la possibilité d'y ouvrir une usine de production. Par ailleurs, la direction a des discussions pour un possible contrat avec l'armée suisse. Hier, la Food and Drug Administration (FDA) a donné le feu vert à la compagnie de Québec pour vendre son système dermosquelette d'assistance à la marche motorisé Keeogo aux personnes ayant des limitations physiques en raison de problèmes de santé. « Les États-Unis représentent plus de 50 % du marché mondial pour ce type d'appareil. C'est majeur, nous allons avoir accès à plus de la moitié de la tarte », note Stéphane Bédard, président et chef de la direction de B-Temia. Cette dernière compte 35 employés dans le monde, dont une vingtaine au Québec. La compagnie a également une division en Asie en partenariat avec Wistron Corporation. Le siège social est à Singapour. Déjà aux États-Unis Mentionnons que dans le cadre d'un partenariat signé en 2018 avec l'entreprise Lockheed Martin, B-Temia travaillait déjà sur certains produits destinés à l'armée américaine. « Le dossier militaire fait intervenir des personnes saines. Lorsque les gens n'ont pas de maladie, la FDA n'intervient pas. Le même produit peut être utilisé pour d'autres objectifs que de restaurer la démarche », dit M. Bédard. L'exosquelette développé pour les militaires améliore notamment leur performance lorsqu'ils doivent transporter de l'équipement sur une plus longue période et aide à prévenir les blessures, avance le président. L'appareil en question fournit une force supplémentaire aux genoux. Gr'ce à l'autorisation de la FDA, B-Temia prévoit prendre de l'expansion au cours des prochaines années, entre autres à Québec où plus de 10 millions $ devraient être injectés. Des embauches seront aussi effectuées. L'entreprise était en discussion avec la FDA depuis 2016. La direction souligne également son intention de poursuivre ses démarches pour obtenir les approbations réglementaires nécessaires dans d'autres pays. Plusieurs projets en chantier Quant à l'expansion au sud de la frontière canadienne, B-Temia, qui a été fondée en 2010, analyse différents scénarios. Comme pour l'Asie, cette offensive pourrait se faire avec l'aide d'un partenaire d'affaires. « On veut rendre accessible le plus rapidement cette technologie à travers le monde. Oui, on pourrait avoir des activités directes sur le territoire américain. Le modèle d'affaires pour les États-Unis est à l'étude », affirme M. Bédard, précisant ne pas avoir d'échéancier à fournir pour le moment. Par ailleurs, « l'armée suisse fait également des essais avec nos produits. Nous avons aussi d'autres projets militaires sur la table », conclut-il. Afin d'appuyer sa croissance, la direction de B-Temia n'écarte pas la possibilité de faire le saut à la Bourse d'ici cinq ans. DAVID DONALD Training systems integrator and operational support specialist CAE is a truly global player, with more than 10,000 employees active in 40 countries. However, its traditional home market in Canada remains a core business, employing 4,500 personnel at 16 sites, and with more than 425 Canadian companies numbered in the supply chain. Forthcoming developments in CAE's Canadian business include the opening of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) helicopter simulator in Ottawa, planned for later this year. The CAE 3000 Series simulator features roll-on, roll-off cockpits for the Bell 429 and 412EPI helicopters, which share a single simulator dome. CAE claims the system offers the highest fidelity yet of any of its simulators. A potential third cockpit could be added once the CCG has selected a helicopter to equip its new icebreaker vessel. Recently, the company's training centres at Trenton (CC-130J) and Petawawa (CH-147F) have been used to provide pre-deployment and mission rehearsal training for Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) crews destined for service in Mali. A high-fidelity virtual database of Mali has been integrated into the CH-147F and CC-130J simulators to provide realistic training, while CH-146 Griffon crews have also received pre-deployment training with a generic Mali database added into the simulator. CAE is also part of Team Cormorant, which is delivering a mid-life update for the CH-149 search and rescue helicopter. The company will establish a training centre at Comox alongside that for the Airbus C295 Fixed-Wing SAR aircraft. The SkyAlyne joint venture with KF Aerospace continues to deliver pilot training for the RCAF through the existing NATO Flying Training Centre (CAE) and Contracted Flying Training and Support (KF) programmes, while positioning to bid an integrated future aircrew training system for the 2020s. Other future opportunities include the RPAS programme, for which CAE is bidding as part of Team SkyGuardian Canada with General Atomics, and the Future Fighter Capability Project (FFCP). CAE remains non-exclusive with regard to FFCP, and is in discussions with all four bidders regarding both training and operational support activities. Continuing its multi-faceted operational support and system integration efforts, CAE has supplied an integrated information environment (IIE) for the Sikorsky CH-148 Cyclone to assist and streamline maintenance. The IIE was thoroughly tested recently during the Cyclone's first six-month at-sea deployment.
