Leonardo sees market opportunity for M-346 attack variant in Middle East

Correction: Leonardo has corrected statements made about M-346 customers during a tour of one of its facilities by Defense News, and this story has been updated to reflect that.

BEIRUT — After the first order of its fighter attack variant of the M-346, Italian firm Leonardo is marketing the fighter jet in the Middle East, industry officials told Defense News, while noting that the training version was tested in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar.

“M-346 has been tested in Kuwait under hot conditions, passing all the tests successfully, and then it was also tested with the Italian Air Force in November 2018 in Qatar,” a Leonardo official said.

Defense News spoke to the official during a tour of the company's facilities in Venegono Superiore, Italy. Leonardo would not identify the M-346FA customer or the contract value, despite inquiries by Defense News during and after the tour.

The deal comes in the wake of increased interest for trainer jets — both those solely used for training and those able to perform close-air support missions — from Mideast countries seeking to expand their respective fighter fleets.

“There is an increasing need for trainer jets in the MENA [Middle East and North Africa] region as countries there work to expand their fighter fleets. The MENA nations have requirements for trainers also able to perform close‐air support missions," said Marco Buratti, Leonardo's senior vice president of international marketing and strategic campaigns.

“Among the most notable examples that have chosen Leonardo's training approach is the UAE's national aerobatic team, Al Fursan — widely recognized as one of the best in the world and considered as a UAE national pride — which uses the Aermacchi MB‐339 aircraft,” he added. “The Emirati pilots were trained in Italy and the UAE under the supervision of the Frecce Tricolori pilots using Italian aircraft and training systems.”

Leonardo offers its trainer customers the opportunity to send personnel to its International Flight Training School, where it trains pilots in four phases: primary training/screening; basic-advanced training; lead-in to fighter training; and an operational conversion unit.

Leonardo is a member of the Eurofighter consortium, which builds the Typhoon fighter jet. Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are among those in the Gulf region who have ordered the aircraft.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Italy has joined the United Kingdom's Tempest program for a next-generation fighter. Will the M-346 be the chosen trainer for that effort?

“M-346 demonstrated its capability as [a] trainer for Eurofighter and F-35. It is early to speak about Tempest program because we don't know yet how it will be inserted in the combat environment," a Leonardo official told Defense News. "First, we need to understand [the] Tempest combat environment, and then we evaluate the M-346 as a trainer for the Tempest, or if in 10-15 years from now Leonardo will have to evolve the training system towards a new combat environment that require[s] new training skills.”

The new four-star command was stood up in October at the Association of the U.S. Army's annual conference in Washington. The plan is to realign the Army's modernization priorities under a new organization that will implement cross-functional teams that correspond with the service's top six modernization efforts: Long-Range Precision Fires, Next-Generation Combat Vehicle, Future Vertical Lift, the network, air-and-missile defense and soldier lethality. The service plans to make an official announcement on the location of the command July 13 at the Pentagon. The Army has wanted the new command's headquarters in a city or urban hub close to industry and academia and not on a base or military installation. Earlier this year it shortlisted several major cities in the U.S. as possible locations and put each through a rigorous vetting process. Congressional leaders from the locales pressed hard for a chance to host the new command. The creation of the AFC has also meant taking some elements from some of the major commands and moving them over to the new organization, Army Undersecretary Ryan McCarthy told Defense News in an exclusive interview just ahead of the Association of the U.S. Army's Global Force Symposium in March. But he said many of those elements won't have to move to the command's new location. The AFC's first commander has been reported to be Lt. Gen.     With this contract, Leonardo's OTO 76/62 Super Rapid becomes the reference defence system for the German Navy Managed by a state of the art control console maximizing its performances, the system can be integrated on any type and class of ship, including smaller units The OTO 76/62 SR system is a best in class in its segment, in use with almost 60 Navies worldwide. It has recently successfully completed an extensive vulnerability assessment campaign ensuring its resilience to cyber-attacks Leonardo signed a contract with the Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr, the German Federal Office in charge of defence acquisitions, to provide seven OTO 76/62 Super Rapid systems that will equip the new K130 corvettes of the German Navy. The contract also includes training and spare parts supply. With this new acquisition, Leonardo's naval gun becomes the reference defence system for the German Navy, which has already tested the capabilities of the compact version of the system, integrated on the first batch of corvettes following a previous contract. The signing of the contract strengthens the historical collaboration with the country and with the Agency. Leonardo has indeed provided the first naval artillery systems, in particular the 76/62 Compact, starting from the 70s; the most recent supplies include the 127/64 Vulcano naval guns and the Hitrole 12.7 turrets currently on board the F125 Frigate. The OTO 76/62 SR system, part of Leonardo's naval artillery offer, represents a commercial success. In service with almost 60 Navies worldwide, the system is the only medium-calibre, together with compact version, capable of sustaining a fire rate of up to 120 strokes per minute, a fundamental requirement for defence in asymmetrical war scenarios. It is characterised by the lightweight, accuracy and use of guided ammunition. The flexibility of use makes it particularly suitable for anti-aircraft and anti-missile defence and for point defence. It can be integrated on any type and class of ship, including smaller units. Depending on the configuration, the OTO 76/62 Super Rapid could include the STRALES capability to fire DART guided ammunition specifically designed for the engagement of fast manoeuvrings targets, the VULCANO GPS-guided long-range ammunition able to engage a target with an excellent accuracy as well as the Multi Feeding (MF) device for the ammunition automatic handling.     Thales conclut un contrat de matériel de défense avec les Pays-Bas

    L'agence gouvernementale néerlandaise en charge des matériels de défense (DMO) et Thales ont signé un contrat portant sur la livraison d'un radar NS100, six radars Scout Mk3 et d'un système IFF (Identification ami/ennemi). Le NS100, un radar de surveillance multifaisceaux à deux axes, va remplacer le radar Variant sur le HNLMS Johan de Witt, l'un des LPD (transport de chalands de débarquement) en service dans la Marine royale néerlandaise. Les essais en mer du nouveau radar sont prévus pour 2023. Le radar NS100 de Thales a été choisi en raison de ses performances et de sa technologie à antenne active AESA éprouvée.
