    USAF initiative Agility Prime demonstrates eVTOL advances

    The US Air Force's (USAF) initiative Agility Prime has demonstrated the developments in the electric vertical take-off and landing flight (eVTOL). Conducted at Camp Mabry in Texas, US, the first Agility Prime ORB flight demonstration was witnessed by Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett, Air Force chief of staff general Charles Brown Jr, and Air Force chief master sergeant JoAnne Bass. The leaders were joined by Texas National Guard hosts and AFWERX personnel. Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract recipient LIFT Aircraft demonstrated the flight. The company is one of the first small companies selected as participants for the Agility Prime ‘Air Race to Certification'. LIFT Aircraft has developed Hexa eVTOL to offer a fully autonomous people transport. Under the Agile programme, it will refine and accelerate the progress of Hexa by expanding its flight envelope. During the demonstration, LIFT CEO Matthew Chasen navigated Hexa over the Camp Mabry parade ground. Agility Prime lead and AFWERX director colonel Nathan Diller said: “We now have over fifteen of the leading aircraft manufacturers in the world applying to partner with Agility Prime, with many of them already on contract. “This flight today marks the first of many demonstrations and near-term flight tests designed to reduce the technical risk and prepare for Agility Prime fielding in 2023.” Agility Prime is a non-traditional programme seeking to speed-up the potential commercial market for advanced air mobility vehicles. These vehicles, or ORBs, could be used for specific operations such as medical evacuation, firefighting, civil and military disaster relief, search and rescue, and humanitarian relief.     Lockheed Martin To Provide Enhanced Electronic Warfare Capabilities To U.S. Army And Coalition Helicopters

    Owego, N.Y., October 28, 2019 – Under terms of a recent contract, Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) will provide the U.S. Army and foreign military customers additional electronic warfare systems that enable faster detection and identification of threats. The Modernized Radar Frequency Interferometer system identifies intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) emitters and allows the pilot to detect and engage a threat long before the aircraft becomes vulnerable, increasing aircraft survivability and lethality. “Since the first delivery of the MRFI production unit in February 2018, the MRFI program has delivered enhanced electronic warfare capabilities to our U.S. Army and international coalition customers,” Hamid Salim, vice president, Advanced Product Solutions at Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems said. “At Lockheed Martin, we continue to partner with our customers to modernize our forces and enhance their arsenal and capability readiness. We are extremely proud to offer this critical capability to the Apache warfighter.” The MRFI system delivers accurate Radar Frequency information by quickly detecting, identifying, prioritizing, and locating radars in dynamic battlefield environments to protect air crews. The recent $42.7 million contract for MRFI systems represents a second delivery order and increases the total program value to $102 million. MRFI production will be performed in Owego, New York through 2022. Lockheed Martin has provided more than 7,800 electronic warfare (EW) systems for more than 50 years to the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. EW systems provide electronic attack, electronic protection and electronic support to disrupt adversaries and protect warfighters. Airborne EW systems include the AN/ALQ-210 for U.S. Navy and international MH-60R, AN/ALQ-217 for the U.S. Navy's E-2C/D aircraft, and the APR-52 digital Radar Warning Receiver for U.S. Air Force Combat Rescue Helicopters. Additional airborne platforms include the AH-64D/E Apache Helicopter, B-2 Bomber, Canadian Maritime Helicopter and the CP-140. Naval EW systems include SEWIP Block 2 for aircraft carriers, cruisers, and destroyers, and BLQ-10 and Multi-function Modular Mast (MMM) for Virginia- and Seawolf-class submarines.     La France organisera un sommet européen sur la défense en 2022

    La présidente de la Commission européenne, Ursula Von der Leyen, a annoncé, mercredi 15 septembre, qu'un sommet sur la défense européenne sera organisé au premier semestre 2022, sous présidence française. Ursula Von der Leyen a évoqué trois objectifs. Elle estime nécessaire d'améliorer la coopération entre Etats européens en matière de renseignement, en créant un centre commun européen d'analyse de la situation. Elle entend aussi doter l'Europe d'une nouvelle loi européenne contre les cyberattaques, afin d'élaborer des normes communes de défense. Elle propose enfin d'exonérer de TVA les achats d'équipements de défense produits en Europe, une mesure incitative visant à encourager les Etats à privilégier le « made in Europe » afin de réduire leurs dépendances stratégiques.
