Have your say on Winnipeg's police helicopter

The Winnipeg Police Service wants to know what you think of the helicopter and is conducting a survey to find out.

The survey kicks off Wednesday.

Residents will be called at random, in all areas within the City of Winnipeg. The survey is expected to take less that 15 minutes to finish, a news release says.

There is also a survey online, which closes on Nov. 21.

The police force issued a request for proposals to review their flight operations program in March. On July 12, MNP was awarded a contract to complete it.

Air1, the name of the police chopper, has become a common sight in the skies over the city, and the WPS has praised its value numerous times since it first took flight in 2011. However, its original operating cost rose from $1.2 million yearly to $1.8 million in 2015, and the city recently replaced the chopper's infrared camera to the tune of $560,000.

The province was set to launch an independent review in 2016, but a change in funding the following year cancelled that review, said police.

The police service had promised to conduct its own independent assessment to find out whether the cost of maintaining and flying Air1 is worth the price, as well as to see whether it fits the city's strategic plans.

    DAVID PUGLIESE, OTTAWA CITIZEN The U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning II Demonstration Team is now confirmed as coming to the Aero Gatineau-Ottawa 2019 air show. The team will be conducting only two displays outside the U.S. this year. The Aero Gatineau-Ottawa air show runs Sept. 6-8. The RCAF Snowbirds and the CF-18 Hornet Demo team will also be at the show among other attractions. In addition on Aug. 13 the Royal Air Force nine plane precision aerobatic team, the Red Arrows, will be coming to Gatineau-Ottawa for the first performance of their six-week North American tour, Aero Gatineau-Ottawa air show organizers point out. Defence Watch will update with details as they become available. The second location outside the U.S. for the USAF F-35A Demonstration Team will be in Bagotville, Quebec.     Call for Nominations for the International Walt Darran Aerial Firefighting Awards 2020

    Each year the International Walt Darran Aerial Firefighting Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements and innovations within the industry. The deadline for 2020 awards is only one week away. The awards committee invites global aviation community to nominate individuals or companies before Jan. 17, 2020 to celebrate their achievements in aerial firefighting. Aiming to recognize a significant contribution by an individual or organization to aerial firefighting, the awards were inaugurated in honour of the late Walt Darran, who was a pioneer and advocate for safety and advances in aerial firefighting. These sought-after awards are a peer honour, with aerial firefighters from all around the globe honouring fellow colleagues. The nominations and resultant winners are administered by the International Awards Committee — an independent international consortium from the International Fire Aviation Working Group (IFAWG) and Associated Aerial Firefighters. Any person or organization that has made a significant contribution to furthering the safety and/or efficiency of aerial firefighting could be nominated. Once again, nominations are being accepted in two categories: Contribution to Aerial Firefighting Safety and Industry Innovation & Advancement.
