Elbit Systems Demonstrates an Innovative Armored Fighting Vehicle Operated by a Helmet Mounted Display

Haifa, Israel, August 04, 2019 – Elbit Systems has concluded extensive testing and carried out a series of successful capability demonstrations of its innovative Armored Fighting Vehicle (AFV), as part of the CARMEL Future Combat Vehicle project of the Israeli Ministry of Defense.

The innovative AFV introduces a step change in the operational capability of combat vehicles. This is underpinned by applying autonomous capabilities and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate decision making and facilitate target engagement with dramatically increased rapidity and accuracy.

Using a Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) a crew of two warriors operates the AFV under closed hatches, further enhancing capabilities and survivability. The AFV successfully demonstrated its capacity to function as an independent high fire-power strike cell, as a networked station for multi-spectral sensing and information fusion, as well as a base platform for operating additional unmanned systems.

The capabilities were exhibited by a technology demonstrator integrating a range of the Company's systems, among them: UT30 unmanned turret, Iron Vision HMD, a land robotic suite, TORCH Command & Control (C2) system, E-LynX software defined radios, SupervisIR terrain dominance system, MAY acoustic situational awareness system, AI applications, THOR Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) and Pioneer fighting Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV).

The AFV is capable of performing key combat tasks with high level of autonomy – off road driving, rapid target acquisition and prioritization, as well as fast, high precision fire missions, in day and night.

The AFV is networked allowing it to carry out missions ordered by Headquarters and other fighting platforms as well as to transmit missions and intelligence to other forces. Additionally, the AFV is capable of operating other unmanned platforms such as a VTOL to feed intelligence into the crew's operational picture or a fighting UGV to perform high risk missions.

Using the Iron Vision ‘See-Through' HMD, a crew of two is capable of operating the AFV entirely under closed hatches. The system transmits real-time, high resolution video to the crew's helmet mounted display, providing them with a 360° view of the surroundings, together with relevant symbology and C4I data. In addition, Iron Vision enables the crew to acquire targets, conduct line-of-sight (LOS) driving and navigation and enslave the AFV's weapons systems to their LOS.

    The Defence Secretary has committed £66m of defence's new multi-million-pound Transformation Fund to fast-track military robotic projects onto the battlefield this year. It was announced today at the Autonomous Warrior Exploitation Conference at the Science Museum, Kensington that the British Army will benefit from: New mini-drones, providing troops with an eye-in-the-sky to give them greater awareness to outmanoeuvre enemies on the battlefield. Systems to fit Army fighting vehicles with remote-control capability, so they can be pushed ahead of manned vehicles and used to test the strength of enemy defences. New autonomous logistics vehicles which will deliver vital supplies to troops in warzones, helping remove soldiers from dangerous resupply tasks so they can focus on combat roles. Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said: This announcement is a clear demonstration of how our Armed Forces are reaping the benefits from our new multi-million Transformation Fund. Each of these new technologies will enhance our Army's capabilities whilst reducing the risk to our personnel and I'm delighted we will be revolutionising frontline technology by the end of the year. The MOD has always embraced pioneering technology and this fund will ensure the UK stays at the forefront of global military capabilities and ahead of our adversaries. Yesterday, the Defence Secretary visited 16 Air Assault Brigade in Colchester which will be among the recipients of the new battlefield technologies. He discussed how the new equipment will benefit troops on the ground to help increase their safety and combat effectiveness. The Brigade is specially trained and equipped to deploy by parachute, helicopter and air-landing. Its core role is to maintain the Air Assault Task Force, a battlegroup held at high readiness to deploy worldwide for a full spectrum of missions. Chief of the General Staff Sir Mark Carleton-Smith said: Rapid adaptation is an essential ingredient for success on the battlefield. The fielding of the next generation of armoured fighting vehicles and ground-breaking robotic and autonomous systems will keep the British Army at the cutting edge of battlefield technology, improving our lethality, survivability and competitive advantage.     Knight's Armament Company of Titusville, Florida, unveiled a new suppressor at this year's Special Operations Forces Industry Conference where members of the SOF community get to interact with vendors and industry partners to preview and try out the latest and greatest in special operations kit and gear. KAC's suppressor is designed primarily to be used with the company's premier belt-fed Light Assault Machine Gun platform, chambered for 5.56 NATO and marketed more towards the SOF and private military contractor communities than to conventional infantry forces. True to its name, the LAMG is indeed very light, weighing only 8.6 pounds unloaded. In comparison, the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon weighs in at 17 pounds unloaded. According to KAC, one of the LAMG's biggest selling points is its ability to put down a high volume of fire with a low cyclic rate of just around 575-625 rounds per minute, allowing the end user to maintain a greater degree of control over the weapon and concentrate accurate fire on target. The suppressor, delivered in kit form, mounts to a threaded barrel included in the kit, and makes heavy use of a unique Pressure Reduction Technology system, which vents the gasses from each shot forward, preventing the gas from venting backwards into the shooter's face. Additionally -- and probably its best feature -- the PRT system allows the LAMG to keep its factory cyclic rates during sustained fire without any major dips. The LAMG is currently available to defense buyers, which means that the new suppressor will likely only be targeted towards military sales.     Eurosatory 2020 : le COGES organisera des rendez-vous B2B en visio-conférences en septembre

    Pour compenser l'annulation d'Eurosatory 2020, la COGES, filiale du GICAT, va organiser des rendez-vous B2B sous forme de visio-conférences les 14 et 15 septembre prochains. Une première pour Eurosatory Contrainte d'annuler le salon Eurosatory 2020 pour cause de coronavirus, la Coges, filiale du Gicat, va organiser, les 14 et 15 septembre prochains, des rendez-vous B2B sous la forme de visio-conférences organisées par Proximum, un prestataire que Coges connaît déjà bien pour avoir organisé de tels rendez-vous dans ses propres salons, à Eurosatory notamment. A ce niveau, et dans l'armement, où la confidentialité incite à des rencontres directes plutôt qu'à des visios sans garantie totale d'interception, cette initiative est une première que forcément les organisateurs de salon vont regarder de près. Les PME et ETI, qui sont représentées dans les salons (qui représentent une énorme effort rapporté à leurs moyens) vont aussi devoir se positionner. Le Gicat à l'initiative Autre difficulté, des problèmes de compatibilité entre créneaux horaires risquent de se produire d'un continent à l'autre. Mais manifestement, le GICAT veut montrer à ses adhérents et à ses clients du salon qu'il est conscient de son rôle d'animation du secteur. D'ores et déjà, la campagne de remboursement d'Eurosatory 2020 est aussi engagée. L'annulation d'Eurosatory a forcément un gros impact pour les rentrées de la Coges, mais aussi pour un écosystème de fournisseurs qui travaillent autour (fabricants de stands, restauration, limousines, etc). Au cabinet de la ministre des Armées, Florence Parly, on mesure amplement l'impact sur les industriels de la filière terrestre. Au GICAT, on rappelle que 50 % du chiffre d'affaires des adhérents proviennent de l'exportation. Et qu'évidemment Eurosatory y concourt à son échelle. Des formules de salons à revoir ? Cette dématéralisation des salons professionnels est une tendance encore faible, mais réelle. Le coronavirus ou covid-19, et son caractère potentiellement récurrent oblige à se poser les bonnes questions pour les salons. D'autres organismes français vont forcément devoir se poser de telles questions, rassembler les rendez-vous, digitaliser. Ceci alors que les dépenses de communications connaissaient déjà de très fortes baisses tendancielles et/ou conjoncturelles avant-même le covid-19, comme chez Thales et Dassault Aviation. La multiplication des salons régionaux et thématiques fragilise aussi les gros salons, et assèche les trésoreries des exposants. Report de trois autres salons Le covid-19 impacte aussi clairement les trois autres salons professionnels détenus par la COGES : le salon Platinum à Monaco (sécurité privée et intérieure) prévu en mai et repoussé aux 2 et 3 février, Shield Africa à Abidjan est décalé de fin janvier aux 7-10 juin (également pour prendre en compte les élections). Enfin, ExpoDefensa à Bogota se tiendra du 29 novembre au 2 décembre. A ce stade, Euronaval 2020 est maintenu et le Sofins reste programmé pour 2021.
