  France wants to buy Airbus tankers sooner

  By: Pierre Tran PARIS — France renewed a pledge to speed up by two years delivery of 12 Airbus A330 multirole transport tanker jets for the French Air Force by 2023. “At the ministerial investment committee, the Direction Générale de l'Armement received the mission to accelerate the delivery of the A330 MRTT Phénix,” the armed forces ministry said in a Sept. 20 statement. A 12-strong fleet of the A330 MRTT by 2023 brings forward delivery of the air tankers by two years, the ministry said. A further three units will be ordered to bring the total fleet to 15 in the following years, the ministry added. No dates were given for a contract for the A330 MRTT or the value of the planned order. No date was set for a further batch of three more units. That boost for inflight refuelling was among the equipment modernization measures included in the 2019-2025 military budget law, formally signed by French president Emmanuel Macron just before an official garden party on July 13. The French Air Force has long lobbied for renewing the aerial capability, as the present aging tanker fleet is a key element in the airborne nuclear deterrent. French air operations in allied operations in the sub-Saharan Sahel region and the Middle East rely heavily on U.S. air tankers. The A330 MRTT will replace a mixed fleet of C-135FR and KC-135R tankers — some of which are close to 60 years old — and A310 and A340 strategic troop and transport aircraft.   Le conflit en Ukraine pousse l’Europe à muscler sa stratégie cyber

  Déclenchée une heure avant l'offensive terrestre russe, l'attaque destinée à couper les communications ukrainiennes utilisant le réseau de satellites KA-SAT, exploité par Viasat, avait, par ricochet, privé d'internet des milliers d'utilisateurs en Allemagne, en France, en Hongrie, en Grèce, en Italie et en Pologne. « Nous pouvons attribuer au gouvernement russe la cyberactivité malveillante menée contre l'Ukraine » déclarait le 10 mai dernier le chef de la diplomatie de l'Union européenne, Josep Borrell. C'est la première fois que les vingt-sept États membres de l'Union s'accordent sur une réponse conjointe face à une cyberattaque, en dégainant un outil pourtant à sa disposition depuis 2017. La France avait déjà fait du renforcement de la cybersécurité dans l'Union une de ses priorités. « Le conflit en Ukraine est le genre de choc systémique qui fait tout accélérer et prendre conscience qu'il faut faire encore davantage. Cela a donné un nouvel élan aux discussions sur le besoin de coopération renforcée, y compris dans le domaine cyber », explique Miguel Gonzalez-Sancho, chef de l'unité pour la cybersécurité à la direction générale des réseaux de communication et des technologies de la Commission européenne. Selon plusieurs spécialistes, le niveau d'échange d'informations sur les menaces n'a jamais été aussi élevé, à la fois entre États mais aussi entre agences publiques et de grandes entreprises privées. « La plupart des capacités de protection des systèmes d'information sont entre les mains du secteur privé », souligne Dan Cimpean, directeur de l'agence de cybersécurité roumaine. Les États réfléchissent à certifier à l'échelle européenne un réseau de prestataires privés qui permettrait d'aider entreprises et collectivités à faire face aux nombreuses attaques. Le conflit a aussi permis de conclure plus rapidement certaines négociations sur des textes pour renforcer le niveau global de sécurité au sein de tous les États membres de l'Union européenne, que ce soit au niveau des entreprises sensibles, des administrations ou des institutions européennes. « Il y a une volonté politique d'aller plus loin car la question cyber est devenue difficile à traiter au niveau national », ajoute Miguel Gonzalez-Sancho.   Rheinmetall wins multimillion-euro order from international customer for artillery propelling charges

  April 7, 2020 - An international customer has awarded Rheinmetall an order for artillery propelling charges. Booked at the end of March by Rheinmetall Denel Munition (Pty) Ltd., the order encompasses several hundred thousand Tactical Modular Charges. These are to be delivered in 2021. The order is worth over US$80 million (more than €70 million). Made by Rheinmetall Denel Munition, Tactical Modular Charges are designed to propel 155mm artillery shells. Finetuned to match the customer's weapons systems and artillery projectiles, they assure maximum effectiveness. Moreover, their modular design simplifies logistics as well as handling procedures in self-propelled howitzer systems. Other positive characteristics of this advanced Rheinmetall Denel Munition product include reduced barrel wear (RDM's Barrel Wear Reducer/BWR) and lower muzzle flash (RDM's Muzzle Flash Reducer/MFR); the former results in longer barrel life, the latter makes the artillery system harder for the enemy to detect. Rheinmetall possesses comprehensive expertise in the world of advanced indirect fire systems – those that meet the criteria contained in the NATO Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding (JBMoU) as well as non-JBMoU systems. During test firing at the Alkantpan proving ground in South Africa, three new maximum ranges were attained with different guns. A 52-calibre G6 howitzer hurled a shell 76 kilometres, the longest ranged ever attained by a conventional 155mm artillery projectile. The 52-calibre main gun of the PzH2000 self-propelled howitzer achieved a range of 67 kilometres, while a 39-calibre field howitzer reached 54 kilometres.
