Triumph and Embraer Collaborate to Demonstrate Advancements in Thermoplastic Structures

Berwyn, Pa., November 4, 2019 /PRNewswire/ - Triumph Group (NYSE: TGI) and Embraer announced today a cooperative agreement to jointly develop and demonstrate the airworthiness of a thermoplastic primary structure in flight.

Triumph Aerospace Structures has been developing a thermoplastic elevator assembled using induction welding. The primary detail parts for the elevator structure will be made of unidirectional carbon reinforced thermoplastic material, a first for the industry.

"We are excited to demonstrate the major leap in the technical maturity we have developed in large thermoplastic primary structures and induction welding."

Embraer will integrate the thermoplastic elevator structure in an aircraft platform and perform in-flight tests to demonstrate the technology readiness.

Triumph has made significant investment in thermoplastic technology, and an in-flight testing of the elevator will demonstrate the technology is ready to progress from the lab into production.

Afin de prendre en compte l'évolution des menaces et renforcer les capacités du Rafale, Thales poursuivra le développement du système de guerre électronique SPECTRA. « Le radar à antenne active RBE2 verra son emploi amélioré notamment pour ses capacités en mode air/sol. Quant à la nacelle optronique TALIOS, l'Intelligence Artificielle permettra un traitement en vol presque en instantané des données collectées pour extraire et identifier les cibles », ajoute Thales. Le traitement des informations collectées par les capteurs du Rafale sera donc amélioré et permettra aux pilotes d'appréhender au mieux la situation opérationnelle. The decision to buy new Boeing F-15s reflects the Pentagon's desire to keep two American companies making fighter jets into the next decade — and not the acting defense secretary's ties to the company, a senior defense official said Friday. The 2020 budget request contains $1.1 billion to buy eight F-15X jets, a new variant of an aircraft the Air Force last bought nearly a decade ago. The twin-tailed plane was chosen over Lockheed's cheaper single-engine F-16 in part to keep a second U.S. manufacturer in the tactical-jet business as the Pentagon begins exploring new technologies for a new generation of warplanes, the official said. “One of the considerations was the diversity of the industrial base,” the official said. “If we look at something as important as the tactical aircraft industrial base and we look forward into sixth-generation [fighter] production and competition and that kind of stuff,...gaining diversity in that industrial base is going to be critical.” The senior defense official emphasized that Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, who formerly worked as a Boeing executive, was not involved in the decision to buy the F-15X.     The $25 million contract will provide a system that supports the military’s complex weather prediction workloads.

    By Brandi Vincent, Through a strategic partnership unveiled Wednesday, the U.S. Air Force and Oak Ridge National Lab will acquire a high-performance supercomputing system from Cray Inc. that aims to improve weather forecasting for Air Force and Army operations across the globe. Under the $25 million contract, the new system—called HPC11—will bring supercomputing-as-a-service to the Air Force's 557th Weather Wing, which creates and supplies comprehensive terrestrial and space weather information to the two military branches. “The system's performance will be a significant increase over the existing [high-performance computing] capability and will provide Air Force weather operators with the ability to run the next generation of high-resolution, global and regional models, and satisfy existing and emerging warfighter needs for environmental impacts to operations planning,” Steven Wert, an Air Force official and member of the senior executive service said in a statement. The system is expected to help the Air Force execute its mission more effectively by offering new features that support the military's complex weather prediction workloads. Official expect the system to improve forecasts and weather threat assessments that insiders rely on. Supercomputer manufacturer Cray also recently announced it's delivering the world's fastest supercomputer to the Energy Department by 2021, which it plans to outfit with a first-of-its-kind storage system that can hold more than an exabyte of data. “This is a great example of the upcoming Exascale Era bringing a new set of technologies to bear on challenging problems and empowering the Air Force to more effectively execute on its important mission,” Cray's President and CEO Peter Ungaro said. The system is expected to be delivered at the end of the year and accepted in early 2020.
