Navy issues $23.4M contract for Block 5 Virginia-class sub hardware
The Virginia-class contract was issued to Lockheed Martin, days after General Dynamics was awarded a $22.2 billion deal for nine of the next generation submarines.

Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems received a $23.4 million deal to procure hardware for Virginia-class submarines, the Department of Defense announced Friday.
The contract funds the purchase of long-lead-time material for two Virginia Block 5 hulls, one Virginia installation and checkout kit, one pre-production unit and associated hardware assets for testing, according to a press release.
On Tuesday, General Dynamics Electric Boat received a $22.2 billion contract to build nine Block 5 subs for the Navy.
Virginia-class submarines are built to conduct anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface-ship warfare, strike warfare and special operations support as well as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
Block 5 submarines have an additional payload module and more payload tubes for launching cruise missiles.
Work will be performed in Syracuse and is expected to be completed by December 2020.

Marines want electroshock rounds to fire from standard weapons
By: Todd South Marines have dazzling laser lights to wave off unwanted intruders at checkpoints and close-range police-style Tasers for crowd control. But what about when a Marine needs to reach out and shock someone? A new notice posted on the Department of Defense Small Business Innovation Research website shows that the Marines are looking for a Taser round that can be fired from conventional weapons such as 9 mm pistols, 12-gauge shotguns or even 40 mm grenade launchers, first reported by The National Interest. This request for Small Arms Long-Range Human Electro-Muscular Incapacitation Munition, or HEMI, is one of a range of nonlethal weapons sought and being fielded by all the services. The Army announced in June it would acquire a paintball-type gun that fires a round that releases a “debilitating cloud” of irritant, much like hot sauce. Earlier this year at a Pentagon showcase, the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program displayed concepts and prototypes of weapons, specifically lasers, that would do everything from heat a person's skin from a distance to create a plasma ball at any location that can “talk” to a target to ward it away from a restricted area. Serco Awarded $162 Million Contract to Support U.S. Navy’s Amphibious Warfare Program Office
September 30, 2019 - Serco Inc., a provider of professional, technology and management services, announced today that the Company has been awarded a contract to continue its support to the U.S. Navy's Amphibious Warfare Program Office (PMS 377) with a full range of professional support services including Test & Evaluation Program Support, Technical Management Support, Acquisition & Life Cycle Management, and Integrated Logistics Support. This is the first contract award announcement for the Naval Systems business that Serco acquired from Alion Science & Technology Corporation. The recompete contract has a one-year base period plus four one-year option periods and is valued at $162 million, if all options are exercised. The business began providing direct program support to PMS 377 in 2009, and since then the program has grown from 8 personnel to approximately 220 today. Under the contract award, Serco will continue providing services that support the new construction and delivery of Navy amphibious ships and crafts, as well as the entire program lifecycle of four classes of craft, including multi-purpose (LHAR Class) ships, Landing Craft Utility (LCU 1610 and LCU 1700), Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) and Ship Shore Connector (SSC). Services provided range from concept design and engineering; to program management for production and ship/craft delivery; to fleet support including Ship Life Extension Program (SLEP), regular overhauls and vessel retirement.
