  Canada joins alliance seeking new maritime surveillance aircraft

  Posted on February 15, 2018 by Ken Pole Canada has joined an international program which is expected to yield a new generation of maritime surveillance aircraft that will eventually replace platforms such as the extensively-upgraded CP-140 Auroras first deployed by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in the early 1980s. The Department of National Defence confirmed in a statement that Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, in Brussels for the latest North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) defence ministerial meeting, had signed a letter the previous day signalling Canada's intent to join the Maritime Multi-Mission Aircraft (M3A) forum, where the allies would “share force development resources and knowledge, in the pursuit of maritime patrol aircraft recapitalization.” Poland also confirmed plans to join France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and Turkey on developing follow-on solutions for aging fleets of maritime anti-submarine and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft which are becoming increasingly costly to maintain. The original six began collaborating last June, hoping that a common approach could help to contain the cost of developing new aircraft. “This joint effort recognizes the fact that the majority of allies' maritime patrol aircraft fleets will be reaching the end of their operational lives between 2025 and 2035,” said NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller during the signing ceremony.   Four companies awarded $72.8M for special projects for Navy, DHS, CBP

  By Allen Cone July 9 (UPI) -- Four companies have been awarded contracts worth $72.8 million for unspecified special projects and electronic systems for the U.S. Navy, Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection and other government agencies. The three-year contracts include two two-year option periods, which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of all four contracts to an estimated $176.4 million, the Department of Defense announced Monday. Awarded contracts were Deloitte Consulting for $21.7 million, Serco Inc. for $18.2 million, McKean Defense Group for $17.6 million and Alutiiq Information Management for $15.3 million in the execution of sustainment and technical support for special projects and electronic systems for experimental, demonstration and developmental technology. The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, Pacific Special Projects and Electronics Systems Branch last June posted a proposal for management, hardware engineering, software engineering, configuration management and logistics support that includes experimental, demonstration and developmental technology for the U.S. Navy, Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection and other government activities. Among the Naval units involved with the developmental efforts are the Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command, Naval Information Warfare Systems Command Program Executive Offices, Commander Third Fleet, Sea Systems Command and Facilities Command, in addition to non-Navy units. All four companies will compete for task orders under the contracts, which run through July 7, 2022. If all contract options are exercised, the period of performance extends through July 7, 2026. All work under the contracts will be performed in San Diego. The U.S. Navy in June removed "space" from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, or SPAWARS, and added "information" in a rebranding effort that emphasizes information warfare. The agency's new name is the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command. This past February, the two echelon III commands -- formerly "systems centers" -- also changed names.   Deux candidats encore en lice pour l'achat de la défense sol-air

  Berne (awp/ats) - Deux systèmes de défense sol-air de longue portée sont encore dans la course pour le renouvellement de la défense de l'armée suisse. Le consortium français Eurosam et la société américaine Raytheon ont transmis leurs offres. Israël a renoncé. La soumission de cette première offre marque le début de la phase d'analyse et d'essais, a indiqué armasuisse lundi. Un deuxième appel d'offres aura lieu dans le courant de l'hiver prochain. Des spécialistes du Département fédéral de la défense vont analyser les offres des fabricants en évaluant l'efficacité des différents systèmes et en testant la performance du radar. Aucun essai de tir ne sera effectué. Ces analyses donneront lieu à des rapports individuels. Les candidats ne seront comparés qu'ensuite. Suivra un deuxième appel d'offres. Le Conseil fédéral tranchera. La surface à couvrir par la défense sol-air doit être de 15'000 km2 au moins. Le système doit atteindre une altitude d'engagement de plus de 12'000 m et une portée supérieure à 50 km. Il n'est pas nécessaire de disposer d'une capacité de défense contre des missiles balistiques. Le renouvellement des moyens de défense sol-air de longue portée fait partie du programme d'achat de la nouvelle flotte d'avions de combat de l'armée suisse. La facture totale se monte à 8 milliards de francs suisses.
