Statement from Minister Blair on the Fourth Biannual Report of External Monitor

The Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Bill Blair, issued the following statement today in response to Madame Jocelyne Therrien’s fourth External Monitor status report. The report provides an update on the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) implementation of the 48 recommendations of the Independent External Comprehensive Review (IECR).

    Rahul Bedi, New Delhi - Jane's Defence Weekly India's Larsen & Toubro (L&T) officially launched the country's first private-sector Armoured Systems Complex (ASC) on 19 January, in which the Indian Army's (IA's) K-9 Vajra (Thunderbolt) – a variant of the Hanwha Techwin K-9 Thunder 155 mm/52-calibre tracked self-propelled howitzer (SPH) – is already being built. Spread over 40 acres and located in the western coastal town of Hazira, the ASC, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be used to construct and integrate armoured platforms such as SPHs, future infantry combat vehicles and main battle tanks under the government's ‘Make in India' initiative. The company pointed out in a statement that it has already built 10 of the 100 K-9 SPHs ordered by the IA in mid-2017 for INR45 billion (USD630 million), which were handed over to the IA in November 2018: several months ahead of schedule. Delivery of the remaining SPHs is expected to be completed within the next 22 months. According to Ministry of Defence spokesperson Colonel Aman Anand, the first K-9 Vajra regiment is set to become operational by July.     ImSAR LLC wins $$7.2M contract for work on RQ-21A unmanned aerial systems

    ByEd Adamczyk Oct. 11 (UPI) -- ImSAR LLC was awarded a $7.2 million contract for work on payload systems and communications packages of the RQ-21 Blackjack unmanned aerial system. The cost-plus-fixed fee delivery order against a previous ordering agreement calls for work to be executed by October 2020, the Defense Department announced Thursday. The RQ-21 Blackjack is 8.2 feet long, weighs 134 pounds and has a wingspan of 15.7 feet. It can carry a payload of up to 39 pounds, and is used primarily for forward reconnaissance. Introduced in 2014, it was designed by Insitu, a Boeing Co. subsidiary. The contract with the U.S. Navy is in support of a Phase III Small Business Innovation Research program effort named "Advanced Radar Concepts for Small Remotely Piloted Aircraft." ImSAR, headquartered in Springville, Utah, will provide research, development, procurement and sustainment of the AN/DPY-2 split aces payload systems and communications relay package aboard the RQ-21A.
