Northrop Grumman Formally Unveils Firebird UAS

Northrop Grumman has confirmed plans to launch a new product for an intelligence-gathering aircraft or service based on a newly unveiled, mature configuration of the Firebird, the optionally piloted, single-engine aircraft that first emerged as a Scaled Composites-designed demonstrator in 2011.

The twin-boomed Firebird's formal launch, expected in early 2019, will reveal a new entrepreneurial strategy for the San Diego-based Autonomous Systems division of Northrop. Instead of designing the Firebird to compete directly for a share of a market already dominated by another manned or unmanned aircraft, Northrop hopes to stimulate demand for a product that offers a new set of capabilities.

    DÉFENSE Programme SCAF : accord signé entre Paris, Madrid et Berlin L'Allemagne, l'Espagne et la France ont signé, lundi 30 août, à Paris, l'accord intergouvernemental pour la poursuite du programme SCAF (Système de combat aérien du futur) jusqu'au premier vol du démonstrateur en 2027 (phases 1B et 2). Cet accord, paraphé par Florence Parly, ministre française des Armées, son homologue allemande Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer et la secrétaire d'État espagnole à la Défense Esperanza Casteleiro LLamazares, prévoit les modalités et les financements nécessaires aux études devant mener à un démonstrateur en vol du SCAF. Selon la presse, les trois États devraient financer à hauteur de 3,6 milliards d'euros - soit 1,2 milliard chacun - la phase 1B (2021-2024), qui correspond aux études détaillées en vue d'aboutir à la définition d'un démonstrateur. Le montant prévu pour la phase 2 (2024-2027), correspondant à la réalisation du démonstrateur, qui doit voler en 2027, s'élèverait à 5 milliards d'euros maximum à répartir entre les trois pays. Les chefs d'état-major des trois armées de l'Air ont également signé lundi le document fixant les exigences et les conditions d'utilisation opérationnelles communes (CORD) du SCAF.
