Need for New Tech Grows as Air Force's Bird Strike Mission Expands

If Dan Sullivan could use small drones to keep an eye in the sky over U.S. air bases, he would. But that may be a future strategy to survey wildlife lurking near military airfields, posing a risk to aircraft.

Drones would negate the need for airmen to suit up and wade through swampy areas around bases to look for animals. And "if your drone is equipped with a forward-looking infrared, at night it could pick up deer, hogs, coyotes ... and having that drone pick up heat flying around, that would be a great asset for a BASH program," Sullivan, the Air Force's wildlife biologist and the Bird/Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard chief, said in a recent interview with Military.com.

While drone use remains debatable in terms of safety and vulnerabilities, Sullivan said there is a growing need for them and other technologies as wildlife finds refuge near installations that house major aviation operations.

But for now, he said, he'll settle for having more airmen trained in spotting bothersome wildlife and how to safely confront it. "I'm looking to institute a more in-depth training [program] here at the [Air Force Safety Center], more for folks that are boots on the ground."

'A Little War'

Sullivan, who oversees the BASH program, which is headquartered at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, said he sees the "threat" of wildlife increasing because the U.S. has some of the best wildlife conservation programs in the world.

But what about when a Marine needs to reach out and shock someone? A new notice posted on the Department of Defense Small Business Innovation Research website shows that the Marines are looking for a Taser round that can be fired from conventional weapons such as 9 mm pistols, 12-gauge shotguns or even 40 mm grenade launchers, first reported by The National Interest. This request for Small Arms Long-Range Human Electro-Muscular Incapacitation Munition, or HEMI, is one of a range of nonlethal weapons sought and being fielded by all the services. The Army announced in June it would acquire a paintball-type gun that fires a round that releases a “debilitating cloud” of irritant, much like hot sauce. Earlier this year at a Pentagon showcase, the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program displayed concepts and prototypes of weapons, specifically lasers, that would do everything from heat a person's skin from a distance to create a plasma ball at any location that can “talk” to a target to ward it away from a restricted area.     Pendant longtemps l'Occident a constitué un "bloc" partageant les mêmes valeurs et parlant dans le monde d'une même voix pour la paix. Aujourd'hui les pays occidentaux doutent de leurs valeurs, n'y croient plus, et sont en même temps divisés entre eux. Le Président Emmanuel Macron a participé ce 15 février 2020 à la Conférence de sécurité de Munich qui appelle à un sursaut pour préserver une capacité d'action en matière de défense et de sécurité, pour promouvoir la paix. La Conférence de sécurité de Munich, historiquement, est une enceinte qui a été créée en 1962 par Ewald VON KLEIST, un ancien officier allemand qui était l'un des comploteurs contre Hitler en 1944, et l'un des rares survivants du complot. Il avait fondé cette conférence avec l'idée de promouvoir la paix par le dialogue. Souveraineté européenne, place de l'Europe comme puissance politique, en particulier comme puissance d'équilibre, complémentarité entre OTAN et Europe de la défense, relation avec la Russie, doctrine pour la dissuasion nucléaire, le Président de la République a exposé sa vision. « Nous avons besoin d'une stratégie européenne qui est celle de nous revivre comme une puissance politique stratégique. Je vois une Europe beaucoup plus souveraine, unie, démocratique.
