    June 11, 2020 - The U.S. Navy has awarded BAE Systems a contract to produce multiple types of Vertical Launching System (VLS) canisters with a total lifetime maximum value of $955 million. The initial contract was awarded in February with $24 million funded, followed by contract modifications of $99 million and $43 million received in March and May respectively. They also provide identification and firing support to multiple missile types, including the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile, Standard Missile-2, Standard Missile-3, Standard Missile-6, and the Evolved SeaSparrow Missile. Under this latest contract, BAE Systems will produce canisters not only for the U.S. fleet but also for allied nations under a Foreign Military Sales program. Deliveries for the initial order are expected to begin in early 2021, and if all options are exercised, the contract could support the production of canisters over a five-year period, with deliveries extending into 2025.     Taiwan signs deal to purchase 66 F-16 jets from Lockheed Martin

    Taiwan has signed an agreement to purchase 66 F-16 jets from Lockheed Martin amid escalating tensions between the US and China. As part of the $62bn deal, Taiwan will procure the latest generation of F-16s to boost its air power. The Pentagon also confirmed the deal without specifying the buyer. According to a Bloomberg report, the deal marks the first sale of fighter aircraft to the Asian island, which China considers to be part of its territory since 1992 when the former US administration approved the sale of 150 F-16s to Taiwan. The latest agreement comes a year after Taiwan received approval from Washington for the purchase. After the potential deal was announced last year, China issued a strong response and said that the deal will violate the one-China principle. During the past year, the relationship between the US and China further deteriorated over the Covid-19 pandemic, 5G technology, Hong Kong and trade impasse.     L'US Army développe un concept innovant de collaboration drones – robots

    Afin d'accroître l'endurance et la portée de ses drones, l'US Army entend faire collaborer des essaims aériens et terrestres. Des robots pour recharger des drones. L'US Army se penche actuellement sur un concept innovant visant à faire collaborer drones et robots et ainsi accroître les performances de ses essaims de drones. Afin de pouvoir augmenter les capacités des drones déployés au sein de l'essaim, ces derniers se rendront au sol et se poseront sur des robots, qui leur serviront de plateformes de chargement. Une idée astucieuse afin de considérablement augmenter la portée et l'endurance de ces petits aéronefs. Algorithmes et intelligence artificielle. Afin de conduire ce projet, le laboratoire de recherche de l'US Army a notifié à l'université d'Illinois un accord portant sur 4 ans et un budget de recherche de 8M$. L'enjeu est notamment de pouvoir définir une intelligence artificielle assez performante afin que les drones puissent se poser en toute sécurité sur les robots au sol, et que ces derniers parviennent à suivre les aéronefs en vol. Néanmoins, de nombreux aspects sont à prendre en compte eut égard à l'environnement opérationnel dans lequel ces drones seront déployés. Ils devront conserver leur discrétion, tout en évitant les potentiels obstacles, puisque toute la manœuvre sera réalisée de façon automatique. L'aspect essaim sera également à gérer car l'ambition est de pouvoir mener une mission en continu. Il faudra donc faire alterner les drones dans les phases de chargement afin qu'il n'y ait pas d'interruption de missions. Libérer la charge mentale du soldat.
