Dossier biocarburant, les avions de chasse à la pointe

Pour faire suite au développement des essais de bio-kérosène dans l'aviation civile de mon dernier article, je vous propose cette fois de nous intéresser à ce qui se fait déjà pour l'aviation militaire. A plus forte raison, que nous sommes également concernés en suisse depuis la semaine dernière avec la dépose des offres pour le renouvellement de la flotte d'avions de combat.

Les F-16 hollandais volent au biofuel

La dernière bonne nouvelle provient des Pays-Bas. En effet, le ministère néerlandais de la Défense (MoD) a annoncé que les F-16A/B « Fighting Falcon » de l'armée de l'air néerlandaise (RNLAF) basés à Leeuwarden utilisent des biocarburants depuis le 14 janvier dernier. Le ministère a indiqué que la base avait reçu au cours de la semaine du 14 janvier 400'000 litres de bio-kérosène recyclé à partir d'huile de cuisson.

Le biocarburant est produit par la société américaine World Energy, qui, selon le ministère de la Défense des États-Unis, est le seul producteur au monde. Il est fourni par SkyNRG et Shell Aviation, avec le soutien de l'organisation néerlandaise des matériels de défense et du service de ravitaillement. Le mélange utilisé réduit les émissions de CO2 de 60 à 80% par rapport au carburant conventionnel.

Le colonel Paul de Witte, responsable de la réglementation et du développement de la logistique matérielle à la Royal Dutch Air Force, a déclaré: « La transition vers une aviation durable est d'une importance capitale pour la Royal Dutch Air Force. En 2010, nous avons effectué le premier vol de démonstration avec un hélicoptère Boeing AH-64 « Apache » utilisant du biocarburant. Nous souhaitons maintenant travailler à l'exploitation structurelle de tous nos avions en service à partir de tous nos sites. En 2030, l'armée de l'air veut réduire la dépendance aux combustibles fossiles de 20% et, en 2050, pas moins de 70%.

L'US Air Force & L'US Navy engagées

Les vols avec du biocarburant tant civils que militaires ne datent pas d'hier, mais jusqu'ici les appareils testés n'emportaient qu'un maximum de 50% de biocarburant mélangé avec du kérosène d'origine fossile. L'US Air Force a été la première à lancer une série de tests en vol avec un A-10 « Thunderbolt II » en mars 2010 , dont les moteurs étaient alimentés à 50/50 par un mélange de kérosène JP-8 et de cameline. Ce premier vol d'une durée de 90 minutes a eu lieu depuis la base d'Eglin en Floride.

De son côté, l'US Navy n'est pas en reste avec le programme «Green Hornet», et a fait voler avec le même mélange un F/A-18F « Super Hornet » en avril 2010. L'USN a fixé un objectif de diminuer de moitié ses besoins énergétiques à partir de sources alternatives d'ici 2020. Appliquées aux aéronefs militaires d'aujourd'hui, l'initiative «Green Hornet» peut accroître la capacité en réduisant la dépendance sur les combustibles fossiles par des sources étrangères et de la volatilité liée aux conduites de carburant et de transport.

Les Gripen suédois certifiés avec 100% de biocarburant

L'avionneur suédois a réussi une première mondiale en avril 2017 avec le premier vol d'un avion de combat Gripen D alimenté exclusivement au biocarburant.

Ces vols à 100% verts d'un avion de combat Saab JAS-39D Gripen démontrent le fruit d'une volonté politique associée à une détermination de l'avionneur suédois. En parallèle, cette stratégie vise à soutenir et à développer les conditions pour la technologie environnementale. La stratégie suédoise inclut le support pour l'innovation et la promotion des exportations. L'ambition du gouvernement est de créer les conditions pour le développement du secteur de la technologie suédoise en matière d'environnement et de contribuer ainsi à un meilleur environnement en Suède et dans le monde. Car, pour la Suède, il devient également possible de partager son savoir faire avec les futurs acquéreurs potentiels des avions de la famille Gripen. D'un point de vue stratégique, il s'agit également de diminuer la dépendance vis-à-vis des énergies fossiles, notamment en cas de crise pétrolière.

Ces vols, avec 100% de biocarburant, démontrent aujourd'hui que les ingénieurs ont acquis suffisamment de connaissances pour l'utilisation future de carburant de remplacement. Ces vols prouvent également que la famille d'avion « Gripen » est « sûr » avec ce nouveau carburant. Les vols avec un Gripen D biplace ont été réalisés depuis les installations de Saab à Linköping. En terme fonctionnement moteur, l'équipe de test n'a noté aucune différence entre le biocarburant et le kérosène ordinaire, ce qui signifie que le biocarburant peut être utilisé comme une alternative parfaitement satisfaisante au carburant ordinaire dans Gripen. Le carburant testé CHCJ-5 est constitué d'huile de colza. Par ailleurs, ce biocarburant satisfait aux mêmes exigences de combustion que le carburant fossile.

Le prochain avion pour la Suisse volera au biofuel

Nous connaissons les cinq avions en course pour le renouvellement de notre flotte. Deux appareils se distinguent en matière de certification au biofuel, il s'agit du Gripen suédois de Saab et du Super Hornet de Boeing. Les trois autres concurrents ont un peu de retard sur la certification d'un kérosène vert, mais les trois avionneurs confirment que les appareils proposés le deviendront dans un avenir proche. Reste que nous devrons opter en Suisse soit pour l'achat de biofuel ou d'en produire directement dans notre pays. Cette dernière solution permettrait non seulement de créer de l'emploi est serait un atout pour la fourniture de notre aviation militaire et des transporteurs aériens civils.

    By: Valerie Insinna WASHINGTON — In the crowded exhibit halls of the U.S. Army's largest conference, a strange-looking drone — a small, flat, tailless, triangular aircraft with four flexible rotors — is suspended above a room full of giant wheeled vehicles and static helicopter displays. That aircraft, Textron's X5-55 demonstrator, hasn't been built for a customer or a particular mission, but the company believes that some of the technologies it plans to mature on the X5-55 could be spun off for future U.S. military requirements like a replacement to Textron's own RQ-7 Shadow. The goal is not to come to the services with a family of new products it can adopt, said David Phillips, Textron's senior vice president and general manager for unmanned systems. Instead, it plans to use the X5-55 as a test bed to mature new propulsion, rotor assembly and fuel cell technologies. “We're not going to say, ‘here's your product,' but we'll listen to them and we'll be ready,” he told Defense News in a Oct. 8 interview. “We know what our deployed customers want. Everything is about smaller, smaller, smaller, and doing more and [being] easier to operate and more agile and more flexible and quieter.” What sets the X5-55 apart from other drones is its vector thrust technology that allows it to take off vertically, hover, transition to normal flight and land vertically using the four electric rotors, whereas other drones that vertically take off but fly like an airplane — like the company's Aerosonde hybrid quad unmanned aircraft system — use electric-powered rotors for vertical flight and a heavy fuel engine to power their propeller during horizontal flight. “The logic allows the system, basically, literally to eliminate what we call flight control surfaces. So you won't see ailerons. You won't see flaps, you won't see servos and those things that control the elevation, climb and descend in normal flight,” he said. “That's all done with the vector thrust. We change how those electric motors and the props work in tandem to be able to climb or descend.” Textron unveiled the X5-55 this May at the Association for Unmanned Vehicles International Xponential conference, but the version shown this week at the Association of the U.S. Army's annual conference has already been modified with new propulsion pods and rotor assemblies that help enable vector thrust, as well as landing gear that protects the underside of the drone as it touches down. The demonstrator flies every several weeks at Textron's schoolhouse at Blackstone, Virginia. And over the next few months, the company plans to continue testing the drone's ability to move from hover to standard flight, as well as eventually work up to endurance flights that prove how long the UAS can remain airborne. Although the Army does not have a formal requirement for a Shadow replacement, officials have expressed interest in fielding one soon. Earlier this year, Brig. Gen.     Despite pressure from lawmakers and pandemic, French defense budget to remain unchanged

    Christina Mackenzie PARIS — Despite calls from French lawmakers for the nation's defense industry to receive extra financial support from the government to counter the negative effects of the coronavirus pandemic, the 2021 defense budget will remain unchanged. Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly said last week that the 2021 defense budget — planned before the pandemic as part of the 2019-2025 military program law — represents “the third year in a row that we have followed the military program law to the letter: This is an unprecedented effort, with an additional €1.7 billion [U.S. $2 billion] or so every year.” She added that the armed forces since 2019 have had €18 billion more to spend than in 2017, noting that between 2019 and 2023, the military investment budget will total €110 billion, which is more than the €100 billion national recovery plan announced by the French government last month to support a suffering economy. But Françoise Dumas, president of the National Assembly's National Defense and Armed Forces Committee, had called for “defense to be at the heart of the future recovery plan." And Cédric Perrin, vice president of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces, argued “there is no specific component of this €100 billion plan for the defense industry sector.” The €49.7 billion French defense budget for 2021 includes payment appropriations of €39.2 billion, which is an increase from the previous year, as planned in the 2019-2025 military program law. Of this, a record €22.3 billion is earmarked for modernizing equipment and buildings; €12.3 billion will go toward wages; and €4.6 billion is appropriated for operating costs. The government's department focused on veterans' affairs is to receive €2 billion of the total defense budget, and the remaining €8.5 billion will go toward pensions. What about the recovery plan? In early June, the government revealed a series of recovery plans aimed at specific industries particularly hard hit by the pandemic. Though the defense sector was not the sole target of the €15 billion aeronautics recovery plan, it nevertheless benefits from the funds, given France's aeronautic giants — Airbus and Dassault Aviation — are active in both the civilian and military sectors, as are their two major suppliers, Safran and Thales. There are about 1,300 companies ranging from startups to major firms in the French aeronautics sector, and they employ approximately 300,000 people. The recovery plan is not aimed at the four major companies, but rather in helping their supply chain involved in specific projects, such as modernizing production tools, research and development efforts, and digital transformation. As a condition for receiving the government funds, the four large companies promised to “consider favorably” offers made by suppliers in France and within the European Union based on global cost, while also taking into account litigation risks, the reliability of after-sales services, the conformity of products and services, their societal and environmental responsibility, and their innovation. The Armed Forces Ministry is participating in the recovery plan by spending €832 million on five measures to ensure “an immediate workload for the whole sector.” The first measure was to anticipate an order for three A330 Phénix multirole tankers, a move enabling the Air and Space Force's two A340 aircraft to retire from service this year instead of in 2028, and its three A310 aircraft to retire in 2021 instead of 2023. The second measure is an order for a light surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft; the third is an early order for eight H225M Caracal helicopters for the Air and Space Force; and the fourth is for a naval airborne drone system (known by its French acronym SDAM) and an onboard mini-drone (SMDM). The fifth measure is for 12 helicopters (two EC-145s and 10 EC-160s) for the Gendarmerie and the civil security force. The ministry's contributions also include €300 million in subsidies for suppliers and subcontractors, as well as €1.5 billion spent over the next three years to support R&D and innovation. What are the defense funds going toward? Under the defense budget, the Army will procure: 12,000 HK416F assault rifles (and order another 12,000). Five Caiman helicopters (and order 21 light joint helicopters). 20 Jaguar armored vehicles; 157 Griffon armored vehicles; 80 renovated VBL light armored vehicles (and order another 120); and 1,000 VLTP light tactical multipurpose vehicles. 850 portable radios (and order 2,900); and 925 vehicle radios (and order 7,300). 200 MMP medium-range missiles and 75 firing posts. 10 SDT tactical drones. The Navy is procuring: A FREMM multimission frigate (and ordering an intervention and defense FDI frigate); and an upgraded light stealth frigate. A Caiman helicopter (and ordering eight HIL light joint helicopters). Three upgraded ATL2 patrol aircraft. Aster 30 missiles; F21 Artemis torpedoes; and four Exocet MM40 Block 3C anti-ship missiles (and ordering 45 Exocet kits). The Air & Space Force is acquiring: An Atlas A400M transport aircraft; three A330 Phénix multirole tankers; two upgraded C-130H transport aircraft; and 14 upgraded Mirage M2000D fighter aircraft. 14 Talios laser designation pods. 90 upgraded Scalp missiles. Six SCCOA 4 radars. Specifically for the space segment, a Musis/CSO satellite; 15 Syracuse IV ground stations; and one Ceres satellite system. The service is also ordering one HIL light joint helicopter; 367 MICA NG air-to-air missiles; 150 Mica NG training missiles; and 13 Syracuse IV ground stations.
