US and British armies eye technology collaboration

LONDON — Government officials have signed an agreement that could lead to the joint modernization of the British and U.S. armies in key technology areas.

British Armed Forces Minister James Heappey and U.S. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy signed a memorandum of agreement on joint modernization for a number of technologies during a meeting in London, the British Ministry of Defence announced July 14.

In a statement, the British government said the agreement is a sign of “intent to formalise a number of ongoing initiatives between the two Armies, boosting opportunities to co-operate effectively as modern warfare continues to evolve.”

The agreement initially aims to cover developing, complementary capabilities from 2023 to 2027, specifically:

  • Networks: the shared development of digital infrastructure to support U.K.-U.S. operations.
  • Long-range precision fires: improving the bilateral capability development.
  • Future vertical lift: creating closer affiliation in the development of helicopter capabilities.
  • Soldier and ground lethality: building on the existing collaboration to improve the effectiveness of land forces.
  • Assured positioning, navigation and timing: providing greater coherence in the development of multidomain technologies.

The goal is to narrow the gap between British and American forces during joint operations, according to the announcement.

Heappey said the agreement “signals our shared determination to develop the novel capabilities that will give us that battle-winning edge and opportunity for the defense industry on both sides of the Atlantic.”

The MoD said the officials discussed in detail plans to work together to modernize programs and capabilities of shared importance.

McCarthy said the partnership “allows costly and complex problems to be distributed and helps protect the industrial base through enabling faster innovation and cost-sharing towards achieving our modernization priorities.”

    JERUSALEM (Reuters) - State-owned defense contractor Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) [ISRAI.UL] said on Tuesday it was in talks to invest in local drone maker Aeronautics (ARCS.TA). The talks were at an early stage, IAI said, and no financial details were disclosed. Meanwhile Aeronautics, which was searched on Monday by Israel Securities Authority investigators, said separately it was also talking to another unidentified group regarding the sale of its 50 percent stake in the surveillance and reconnaissance company Controp Precision Technologies. In August, Aeronautics rejected a 430 million shekel ($115 million) acquisition offer from IAI rival, state-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, and businessman Avihai Stolero. Israel-based Aeronautics manufactures unmanned aerial vehicles for military surveillance and defense purposes, as well as for the commercial sector. On Monday, investigators from the market regulator searched Aeronautics' office, the company said. A court has placed a gag order on details of the investigation. It was not the first time Aeronautics has been probed by Israeli authorities. In August 2017, Aeronautics said the Defence Ministry had suspended the marketing and export license for one of the firm's attack drones to a single, significant customer in a foreign country. It denied it was at fault. Israeli media at the time reported that the ministry had opened an investigation into Aeronautics over whether during a demonstration in Azerbaijan one of its drones was used to attack a military position in the neighboring country of Armenia, and if so, who was at fault. In November that same year Israeli police said they were investigating one of the drone maker's deals but did not give details.     Avec la mission Skyros, l’armée de l’Air entend démontrer ses capacités aériennes

    L'armée de l'Air et de l'Espace (AAE) a annoncé le lancement le 20 janvier de la mission Skyros, qui se tiendra jusqu'au 5 février. Au départ de Djibouti, quatre Rafale B, deux A400M Atlas ainsi qu'un A330 Phénix y participeront. L'objectif est de « démontrer les capacités opérationnelles des forces armées françaises, de compléter la formation des équipages et de renforcer les liens entre la France et les pays visités », selon le ministère des Armées. A travers cette tournée, l'AAE visitera des pays stratégiques, soit des clients actuels du Rafale, à l'instar de l'Inde (36 Rafale) ou encore de l'Egypte (24) soit des prospects, qui ont fait part de leur intérêt pour le chasseur français. Après avoir décollé de Djibouti, qui accueille la base aérienne 188, l'AAE arrivera donc en Inde le 20 janvier. Elle se rendra aux Emirats Arabes Unis le 24, puis en Egypte le 28 et enfin en Grèce le 2 février. Air & Cosmos du 18 janvier 2021
