Telefónica Combines Drones with IoT Sensors for Wildfire Warning System

The combination of drones and wildfires isn't usually a productive one. Emergency teams tasked with fighting them are often disrupted by opportunistic aerial photographers.

But the technology has also proved to be a useful situational awareness for fire crews. Drones can cover ground quickly and provide an indication of a fire's scale and threat, reducing the need to put emergency teams in danger.

    FMU-139 D/B replaces three legacy bomb fuzes, improving reliability and affordability

    ROCKET CENTER, W.Va. – Sept. 5, 2019 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has received its first production order from the U.S. Navy to manufacture the FMU-139D/B, a new all-electronic bomb fuze suitable for many general purpose bombs used by the U.S. Department of Defense and its allied nations. With the U.S. Navy's decision this January to authorize full rate production, the improved FMU-139D/B bomb fuze creates a uniform solution for general purpose bombs that increases performance and reliability, while decreasing cost. The FMU-139D/B replaces three legacy bomb fuzes – FMU-139C/B, FMU-152 and most FMU-143s – which were manufactured with technology that relied on mechanical mechanisms to safe and arm each fuze. In contrast, the FMU-139D/B relies on electronics to safe and arm the device, greatly improving its reliability as 100 percent of the fuze's electronic functionality can be tested before the fuze is delivered to the customer. “Increased flexibility and agility will enable the warfighter to cover a broader set of missions,” said Pat Nolan, vice president, missile products, Northrop Grumman. “The FMU-139D/B's all-electronic nature improves affordability. It is easier to manufacture, assemble and test than other legacy fuzes.” Under Northrop Grumman's contract with the U.S. Navy, the FMU-139D/B production orders have the potential to exceed $400 million over the next four years. FMU-139D/B will be used by both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force, and the Navy Program Office will manage the requirements. The FMU-139D/B will be produced at Northrop Grumman's Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL) facility in Rocket Center, West Virginia. The FMU-139D/B is designed to be a multi-purpose fuze equipped with general purpose characteristics and also serves as a highly survivable fuze for penetrator weapons. This flexibility offers the U.S. Department of Defense and its allied nations a multi-purpose fuze solution.     UAVOS showcases latest UAVs

    Kelvin Wong, Singapore - Jane's International Defence Review UAVOS Inc, a US-based company specialising in the design, development and manufacturing of unmanned vehicles and associated control systems, is partnering with India's Bharat Drone Systems to develop a range of air vehicles and technologies to meet emerging Indian armed forces requirements. The company is taking the opportunity at the UAV India 2018 exhibition in New Delhi to highlight its fixed-wing and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The fixed wing Borey 10 is a tactical-class UAV featuring a flying wing airframe with a wingspan of 3.5 m and maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 15 kg. The baseline UAV is powered by a 2,000 W electric motor and four 6S 16Аh lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries that are packaged within a hermetically sealed shell along with its control systems for improved reliability in austere environments, enabling it to continue operations in temperatures as low as -22 °C. According to UAVOS, the Borey 10 – which features automatic take-off and landing capabilities and can be launched and recovered via a catapult and parachute respectively – is designed to transmit video imagery in difficult meteorological operating conditions at distances over 30 km, with a control range of at least 70 km. The company is quoting a continuous flight endurance of up to 4 hours with a 0.5 kg payload. UAVOS has also developed a range of VTOL UAV platforms. The latest addition is the UVH-290E, which has a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 2 107 kg and measures 2.43 m long and 0.86 m tall with a main rotor diameter of 3.2 m.
