WASHINGTON — Latvia has been cleared by the U.S. State Department to buy four UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, in a move to bolster the NATO nation's ability to move forces around the alliance's eastern flank.
The sale has an estimated price tag of $200 million, which covers the four rotorcraft, 10 engines and associated equipment.
As with all announcements by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the sale must pass through the Senate, at which point negotiations can begin; total quantities and dollar totals often change from the original DSCA announcement and final sale.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a NATO ally,” according to a DSCA statement. “These UH-60 helicopters will allow for interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces in rapid response to a variety of missions, and quick positioning of troops with minimal helicopter assets.”

Le Département d'État américain a approuvé la vente potentielle d'avions de combat et du système Patriot à la Suisse. Cette décision fait suite au référendum qui a eu lieu dimanche dernier en Suisse. Lors d'un vote national, les Helvètes ont accepté d'acheter de nouveaux avions de combat pour remplacer les machines Northrop F-5E / F Tiger II et Boeing F / A-18C / D Hornet en service. Deux fournisseurs d'outre-mer et trois européens se sont disputés le contrat. Les États-Unis proposent à la Suisse des avions Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II et Boeing F / A-18 Super Hornet. En prévision d'une éventuelle décision, les Américains ont déjà accepté d'exporter lesdites armes. Dans le cas des avions F-35A, on parle de la vente potentielle de 40 machines, ainsi que de pièces détachées et d'armes, pour un montant d'environ 6,58 milliards de dollars. 40 chasseurs F / A-18E / F Super Hornet avec un package similaire ont été évalués à 7,45 milliards de dollars. Parallèlement, le département d'État américain a également approuvé la vente de systèmes de missiles de défense aérienne et antimissile Patriot à la Suisse. ROCKET CENTER, W.Va. – Sept. 5, 2019 – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has received its first production order from the U.S. Navy to manufacture the FMU-139D/B, a new all-electronic bomb fuze suitable for many general purpose bombs used by the U.S. Department of Defense and its allied nations. With the U.S. Navy's decision this January to authorize full rate production, the improved FMU-139D/B bomb fuze creates a uniform solution for general purpose bombs that increases performance and reliability, while decreasing cost. The FMU-139D/B replaces three legacy bomb fuzes – FMU-139C/B, FMU-152 and most FMU-143s – which were manufactured with technology that relied on mechanical mechanisms to safe and arm each fuze. In contrast, the FMU-139D/B relies on electronics to safe and arm the device, greatly improving its reliability as 100 percent of the fuze's electronic functionality can be tested before the fuze is delivered to the customer. “Increased flexibility and agility will enable the warfighter to cover a broader set of missions,” said Pat Nolan, vice president, missile products, Northrop Grumman. “The FMU-139D/B's all-electronic nature improves affordability. It is easier to manufacture, assemble and test than other legacy fuzes.” Under Northrop Grumman's contract with the U.S. Navy, the FMU-139D/B production orders have the potential to exceed $400 million over the next four years. FMU-139D/B will be used by both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force, and the Navy Program Office will manage the requirements. The FMU-139D/B will be produced at Northrop Grumman's Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL) facility in Rocket Center, West Virginia. The FMU-139D/B is designed to be a multi-purpose fuze equipped with general purpose characteristics and also serves as a highly survivable fuze for penetrator weapons. This flexibility offers the U.S. Department of Defense and its allied nations a multi-purpose fuze solution.
