The Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) has accepted delivery of its first Ultra-Light Combat Vehicles (ULCV). These vehicles, which were procured from Polaris Industries Limited, will help protect members of Canada's Special Operations Forces as they conduct missions in challenging environments. It will provide them with fast, mobile transportation over demanding terrain, and has been specifically configured to support rapid deployment by most Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft, particularly the CH-147F Chinook helicopter. This procurement – which was completed on time and on budget – will help ensure special forces operators have the tools they need to succeed for years to come. In July, 2017, CANSOFCOM exercised the option to procure an additional 10 ULCV, bringing the total number of ULCV under this acquisition to 62 and value of the contract to approximately $23M. The ULCVs are being delivered as planned and on budget. Delivery of these vehicles will continue through to April 2018. The contract with Polaris Industries Limited includes technical support services, and integrated logistics support for two years.     Canadian firms could be in the running to repair F-35 parts - but will they succeed in such a bid?

    DAVID PUGLIESE, OTTAWA CITIZEN More from David Pugliese, Ottawa Citizen The US government is looking for a company to conduct future depot level repair of F-35 components for the North American region. Since Canada is still part of the F-35 program, Public Services and Procurement Canada is providing details to Canadian industry. The US government wants information from the firms and whether they can do the job. Key criteria include: existing capability, ability to grow, and labour costs. “The Canadian Government, as for all F-35 Participant nations, has been asked to distribute this RFI (Request for Information), collect responses, ensure completeness, and forward to the United States Joint Program Office,” Public Services and Procurement Canada noted. “The Canadian Government is not involved in the selection process. Completed responses will be required by the Canadian Government no later than 16 March 2018.” There are approximately 400 different parts and components to repair. Work would continue until 2040. What are the chances of a Canadian firm being selected? Canada's aerospace industry has the skills to do the work. But the Canadian government hasn't committed to buying the F-35 so that could be a factor. It would be certainly controversial among F-35 users to select a Canadian firm for this role, considering the government's decision not to buy the F-35, at least at this point.     New contracts will improve capabilities on Royal Canadian Navy frigates

    DAVID PUGLIESE, OTTAWA CITIZEN The Canadian government announced two contracts Friday for improvements to the Halifax-class frigates. The contracts are related to the Reprogrammable Advance Multimode Shipboard Electronic Countermeasures System (RAMSES), an electronic attack system that protects the modernized Halifax-class frigates against radio frequency guided missiles, and MASS, an integral part of the anti-ship missile defence suite. RAMSES employs jamming signals to track and distract anti-ship missiles from hitting the ship, according to the Royal Canadian Navy. MASS is a firing system used to launch decoys to project vessels against anti-ship missiles guided by radio frequency, laser and infrared seekers. A $94.2-million contract has been awarded to Lockheed Martin Canada to maintain and overhaul, the Reprogrammable Advance Multimode Shipboard Electronic Countermeasures System. A $21.1-million contract was awarded to Rheinmetall Canada to procure and install a third launcher on the frigates, improving the current MASS configuration. The RAMSES contract will be valid until the late 2030s, if all options are exercised, according to the RCN. The MASS replaced the obsolete SHIELD system.
