Boeing renews its public pitch to replace Canada's CF-18 fleet

One of the companies bidding to sell Canada a new fleet of fighter jets made a public pitch today highlighting its long-standing, cross-country economic relationships and history of delivering high-paying aerospace jobs.

The presentation by Boeing executives and an independent research firm arrives against a background of a pandemic-ravaged economy and a looming federal deadline to submit bids to replace the air force's aging CF-18 fleet.

The aerospace giant, headquartered in Chicago, Ill., is one of three companies that will hand in their final submissions at the end of July with the aim of delivering new jets by 2025.

The other two are Lockheed Martin — with its F-35 stealth jet — and Saab, which will offer up the latest version of its Gripen fighter.

Boeing plans to pitch its Super Hornet fighter. The most up-to-date version of the jet, known as the Block 3, was delivered recently to the U.S. Navy for use on aircraft carriers.

In its presentation, the company estimates the value of its direct economic activity in Canada — both commercial and defence — at $2.3 billion, resulting in 11,000 jobs across the country. The independent report estimates that when indirect spending is taken into account, the U.S. multinational contributes $5.3 billion and 20,700 jobs to Canada's economy.

Boeing's decision to make its case publicly is significant in part because federal finances are reeling under the weight of an anticipated $252 billion deficit and staggering levels of unemployment brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Defence spending tends to suffer whenever federal governments — regardless of their political stripes — grapple with high deficits.

There has been bad blood between the Liberal government and Boeing ever since the U.S. company led the charge against Quebec aerospace manufacturer Bombardier in a trade complaint over passenger jets. The disagreement led to the federal government cancelling a planned sole-source order for a handful of Super Hornets as an interim arrangement while the replacement competition continued.

The U.S. Navy, one of Boeing's biggest customers for fighter jets, recently said it wanted to begin focusing on a replacement for the Super Hornet, which was designed and entered service in the early 2000s.

Jim Barnes, a senior Boeing executive, told a conference call of reporters on Thursday that there is no planned retirement date for the Super Hornet. He claimed the warplane offers the most economical solution for Canada in terms of the cost of flying and operating fighter aircraft.

He said he foresaw the fighter being in service with the U.S. Navy for "decades to come."

The company's argument was recently given a boost when Germany decided to buy 45 Super Hornets as a replacement for its Tornado fighters.

The deadline for final submissions in Canada's competition is now July 31, after it was pushed back on at least two occasions.

Barnes said Boeing is ready to submit and will meet the deadline. He acknowledged the company asked for the latest extension because of the pandemic.

    Remarks by Minister Anand for the CDAI Ottawa conference on security and defence - a Canadian Armed Forces ready for tomorrow

    Speech Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Senators, Members of the House of Commons, General Eyre, Members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Distinguished guests from around the world. Good morning. Bienvenue. And welcome to Ottawa. I would like to sincerely thank Executive Director Youri Cormier and everyone at CDAI for giving me the opportunity to speak to you. Friends, we gather today at an inflection point. The international rules that have preserved peace, stability, and democracy for decades are under direct threat, as Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine enters its second year. Putin thought that Kyiv would fall. He thought he could use this winter to conquer Ukraine. He thought that Europe would freeze in the dark.  And he thought that NATO would fracture. But he was wrong. The NATO alliance has only become stronger. Winter in Ukraine is almost over. Amidst the rubble, spring flowers are beginning to bloom in Ukraine. And, the Ukrainian flag continues to fly overhead. In the face of Putin’s imperial illusions, the strength, hope, resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people are inspiring the world. Canada has stood in solidarity with Ukraine from the beginning. We have committed over one billion dollars of military aid for Ukraine – including, most recently, eight Leopard 2 main battle tanks, over 200 armoured vehicles, and a NASAMS air defence system. We have trained thirty-five thousand Ukrainian personnel under Operation UNIFIER, And earlier this week, we announced that we are extending Canadian training of Ukrainian sappers in Poland through to October and deploying an additional team of Canadian Armed Forces medical personnel to Poland, where they will train Ukrainian forces in advanced tactical medical skills. And I would like to recognize General Wayne Eyre, our Chief of the Defence Staff, who has just returned from visiting our personnel deployed on Operation UNIFIER. Thank you, Chief, for your leadership. We are also supporting Ukraine by deploying the Royal Canadian Air Force to Prestwick, Scotland, a hub from which our aviators have transported over seven million pounds of Ukraine-bound military aid within Europe, from Canada, and on behalf of our Allies and partners. Their unwavering dedication is exemplified by their motto – Can’t stop, won’t stop – and that’s a motto that we believe in too.But let’s be clear: while Ukraine’s fight for freedom and sovereignty remains the focus, the security challenges do not end with Europe. China is an increasingly disruptive global power. It increasingly disregards international rules and norms, and it is making large-scale investments to establish its military capabilities. As China continues to militarize that region, it is also challenging navigation and overflight rights, and it has engaged in coercive diplomacy. Canada must, and will, unapologetically defend our national interests, as we outlined in our Indo-Pacific Strategy. In order to respond to global challenges like these, and protect Canadian interests both at home and abroad, we need to build a Canadian Armed Forces ready for tomorrow – and this is what I’m here to discuss. How do we ensure that we are ready for tomorrow? We start with our people, who must be protected, respected, and empowered to serve when they put on their uniform every day. As such, my top priority continues to be meaningful, durable, and robust culture change across our institution. Culture change is a team effort, and I salute the many culture change champions here today. Being ready for tomorrow also involves recapitalizing. And we are focused on providing the Canadian Armed Forces the equipment that they need to do their jobs and defend Canada. As part of our Strong, Secure, Engaged defence policy, we have committed to increasing our military spending by more than 70% in nine years. Last year, and as the world changed before our eyes, we knew we needed to go further. That’s why, through Budget 2022, we added eight billion dollars in new defence spending over five years. With these investments, we are modernizing our capabilities across all domains – and this is a definite priority for me as Minister. We are signing contracts, finalizing procurements, moving faster, and pushing harder, to deliver our personnel the materiel, resources, and equipment that they need to do their jobs and protect Canada. And, ultimately, we are building a Canadian Armed Forces that will be ready for tomorrow. Let me start with the Air Force. We’re ensuring that the Royal Canadian Air Force is ready for tomorrow. As I announced in January, Canada is acquiring a new fleet of eighty-eight F-35 fighter jets. These state-of-the-art aircraft are the best fighters for Canada, and they will solidify our ability to protect Canada for decades to come. Our investments in the Royal Canadian Air Force include not only aircraft, but also the infrastructure required for these aircraft at both the Cold Lake and Bagotville bases. That’s not all. One of our Air Force’s most important missions is the protection of the North American continent – and that’s why, in June 2022, we announced Canada’s plan to modernize NORAD, backed by an investment of 38.6 billion dollars over the next two decades. This plan invests in: Arctic and Polar Over-the-Horizon radar, C2, air weapons, infrastructure, research, and development. And, as we make these investments, we will work hand-in-hand with Indigenous and Northern partners, to ensure that the economic benefits are shared from coast to coast to coast. And at sea? We’re building a Navy that’s ready for tomorrow. We continue the work of delivering a new fleet of 15 Canadian Surface Combatants for our Navy, with the project now in its design phase and construction expected to begin next year. This is the largest modernization of our naval fleet in decades, and it will ensure excellent interoperability with our allies. On land, we are building a Canadian Army that’s ready for tomorrow. We are equipping the Canadian Army with a new and modern fleet of 360 Armoured Combat Support Vehicles, replacing the current LAV II Bisons and M113 Tracked LAV fleets. This fleet will serve as ambulances, mobile repair and vehicle recovery vehicles, as well as engineer support vehicles and command posts, for both domestic and international operations. But, we know that there are several crucial capabilities that we need to move ahead with – faster. Canada’s largest foreign military deployment is on NATO’s eastern flank, in Latvia, and our troops must have the equipment that they need to protect themselves and do their jobs. And that is why today, I am delighted to share with you that we are proceeding with three procurements as Urgent Operational Requirements – or UORs. Through this accelerated procurement mechanism, we will rapidly deliver the following equipment for our Canadian Armed Forces. First: Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile systems – capable of providing targeted strikes against armoured threats. This project will provide PAXM systems including missiles, simulators and associated support to empower the Canadian Armed Forces with training and the capability to effectively destroy main battle tanks. Second: a Counter Un-crewed Aerial System capability, to provide protection against hostile un-crewed aerial vehicles – and this capability, too, will help protect our personnel deployed in Europe. And third: a short-range Air Defence System, which will also be capable of defeating attack aircraft and Class 1 un-crewed aerial systems in the context of the Canadian-led, enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Latvia. Today, I am delighted to announce that we are proceeding with three procurements as Urgent Operational Requirements. Through this accelerated procurement mechanism, we will rapidly acquire the following: Anti‑Tank Guided Missile systems, a Counter Un-crewed Aerial System capability, and a short‑range Air Defence System. These projects will better equip our Canadian Armed Forces members deployed on NATO’s Eastern Flank with the capabilities that they need. Canada’s leadership of the NATO Battle Group in Latvia demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the Alliance. And these new capabilities will further bolster the security of Allied troops under Canadian command on NATO’s Eastern Flank.           As we continue to equip our people in the traditional domains, we must also be laser-focused on emerging domains like space – and we must ensure that we are ready for tomorrow. Last summer, I ordered the creation of 3 Canadian Space Division. This reorganization of the Canadian Armed Forces serves to facilitate decision-making on matters related to the protection of Canadian assets in space. It will help us observe and attribute irresponsible behaviour in space and allow us to continue to establish common standards of responsible behaviour. It also allows Canada to further its collaboration with partnered and allied armed forces such as France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Germany. Space is crucial to our national security. Canada uses military and civilian assets in space, including GPS and communications systems. If those assets are threatened by adversaries, we risk losing our cell phone services, our banking, our internet, and our navigation systems. It is critical that we are aware of what’s happening in the space domain, so that we can monitor adversaries, support our allies, and safeguard our interests. Today, I have some exciting news to share in this regard. I’m thrilled to announce that we have awarded a contract for a new agile microsatellite designed, built, and operated in Canada. Thanks to a Federal investment of 15.8 million dollars, the Redwing Space Domain Awareness Microsatellite project, will monitor objects orbiting the earth, to help reduce future risks to Canada’s space infrastructure from space debris or human-caused interference. Design, manufacturing and operations will be led by Magellan Aerospace in Winnipeg, Manitoba. And, ground stations will be located in Inuvik, Northwest Territories and Happy Valley Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. When launched in late 2026, this research and development satellite system will identify and help to reduce risks to Canada’s space infrastructure from space debris and human-caused interference. Why does space domain awareness matter? In November 2021, Russia decided to fire a missile into one of its own old satellites as part of its anti-satellite weapons testing. The over fifteen hundred pieces of debris generated by the strike are contributing to the pollution of the low-earth orbit and endangering our assets. Countries like Russia are demonstrating recklessness in the space domain – but Canada, for its part, will always act responsibly in space. And finally, but no less importantly, let me touch on the cyber domain. The cyber domain is here to stay. It will shape the conflicts of today and tomorrow, and Canada will remain ready to protect itself, now and tomorrow. Last winter, we saw Russia disrupt the Viasat KA-SAT Satellite internet service, which rendered critical infrastructure for Internet and communications inoperable in Ukraine and elsewhere in Europe. Canada have the capabilities to help our allies and partners in Europe, and we are doing so. In support of Ukraine, we provide cyber intelligence and threat analysis, cyber security, and are engaged in cyber operations. Outside of Ukraine, we have been supporting Latvia with a Cyber Task Force since last year – to help protect our Allies, and protect our NATO Allies against aggression in the cyber domain. Friends, that is what we are doing in five crucial domains to build a Canadian Armed Forces ready for tomorrow. And to help us in these efforts, we are updating our 2017 Defence Policy to better reflect our rapidly changing world. It is critically important that we get this right, which is why we have been engaging stakeholders across Canada, as well as our Allies and partners, to inform our way forward. Today, we’re launching public consultations with all Canadians on our Defence Policy Update – or DPU. We have launched a new digital platform where Canadians can learn more and share your ideas for the DPU – and I invite you all to contribute online. We want to hear from you on how to recruit and retain talented Canadians, how to create sustainable cultural change, how to meet the needs of Canadians in the event of a natural disaster, and much more. This consultation process also includes targeted discussions with: Indigenous and Northern communities and leaders, who are integral partners in safeguarding Canada’s Arctic sovereignty. NATO Allies, Five Eyes partners, and other like-minded countries. And of course, Canadian industry representatives, defence and security companies, national security experts and scholars . Our Canadian defence industry is innovative, dynamic, and bold. You engineer the impossible. And you help us maintain a strategic edge over our competitors. So, we see you as key partners in our work to modernize. We must also remember that Canada’s economic prosperity is fundamentally linked with our national security. Therefore, we must ensure the stability of our supply chains, and uphold our resiliency by strengthening our ties to our closest partners. Our investments will provide tremendous economic opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers. And by working together, I am confident that we can address the threats of today and anticipate those of tomorrow. Friends, We are at an inflection point in the history of conflict. And that is why there is an urgent to build a Canadian Armed Forces ready for tomorrow. For much of history, a military’s effectiveness was characterized by a steady accumulation of strength – simply having a bigger arsenal. However, today’s era of military competition is also defined by speed, agility, and interoperability. In a changing world, we are ensuring that our military has what it needs for tomorrow. The urgent procurement of Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile systems, a Counter-UAS capability and a short-range Air Defence System will strengthen our abilities in the traditional domains of conflict. And, for emerging domains like space, the Redwing Microsatellite contract award announced today will enhance our awareness and reduce risks to Canada’s assets in space. We know, to stay agile, we must be prepared to push back against threats in all domains, sometimes all at once. Let me conclude by addressing our military members directly: You are at the heart of our work to protect Canada. And we are acting quickly to give you the tools you need to do your job. Modernization involves not just the members of our military, but our industry partners, our friends in academia and think tanks, Indigenous partners, and Canadians. National security is a team endeavour. And we are all part of Team Canada. Together, we will build a Canadian Armed Forces ready for tomorrow.     FEATURE INTERVIEW - MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE

    CDR recently sent Ottawa Bureau Chief, James Careless, to interview Canada's newly re-appointed Minister of National Defence, and with a number of high profile capital projects, such as CSC and FFCP currently in play, there was a lot to talk about. Sajjan is now a veteran in this portfolio and he spoke candidly about international missions, defence policy, procurement, and Canada's role in NATO. There were some surprises too. Here is our in-depth conversation with the Minister. CDR: Minister, it's good to speak with you again for, what's become, our annual chat. Can we start by looking what progress is being made on major capital projects like Future Fighter, and as a corollary to that, what new procurements do you think we'll be seeing in 2020? Minister Sajjan: When it comes to procurement projects and our defence policy, one of the things that Canadian defence industry asked us to do is to provide predictability. We've done that. Even though the defence policy is a 20 year program, we have put out a 10 year defence investment plan to industry. This gives them an idea of where we're at – and we're updating that. Obviously, we've got major procurement projects that are ongoing, but within that there are multiple projects. I'm happy to say that the vast majority are in implementation. Some are already closed and, and there's only a few that still have to be started. The Canadian Surface Combatant ship has been selected, while the Future Fighter is obviously an extremely important one that is under way. But there's a lot of other projects happening that are just as important. STARTING LAV PROJECT SOONER CDR: What role has your ‘Strong, Secure, Engaged' defence policy played in speeding up defence procurement? Minister Sajjan: One of the things about our defence policy is that it gives us authorization to move money around. This allows us to do projects faster when opportunities make this possible. The LAV support projects that we just announced in the summertime was a great example of that. We're going to be getting those five years sooner, because we can start these projects five years sooner. So we were able to move money quicker and get that going. Because we're learning and creating a lot more efficiency in our procurement system, we're able to save money. When we save some of that money, we're able to use it in other projects. As you know, procurement is extremely complex; especially on larger projects. There's going to be times where you're going to have to make some changes. Because we have that flexibility, we're able to provide a lot more efficiency to the system. When we created the defence policy, it involved a thorough consultation where every part of the policy had to be approved by cabinet. Now when projects go through, they know that we've already had really good discussions on the capabilities that we want to bring in. So when we bring those projects to Treasury Board, the policy discussions have already been done. So then we just focus on, “do we have the right process in place?” The nice thing about it – just like the current LAV projects – is we're able to streamline things when a competitive process is extremely important and we can get the best equipment at the best price. But there are some times when going for a sole source is more efficient and better for the Canadian Armed Forces. CDR: Many ofCDR's readers are small and medium-sized defence contractors (SMEs), and they're always concerned about getting their fair share of procurement contracts. So what steps has the government taken to make sure that their share doesn't just go to the big players? Minister Sajjan: Depending on the size of the project, we've actually taken a lot of time to consult our defence industries; not just the big companies, but the small and medium size businesses as well. One thing we've done as we build the requirements, is to ask, “how does it benefit Canadian companies?” So now the bids that come in have much greater Canadian content to them. Just for example, when you look at the AOPS (Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships) that are being built by Irving: The systems integration on the bridge is actually (being done by) a company that is working out of the Lower Mainland (B.C.). That's just one company; a lot of companies are able to benefit from this. So when we look at a project, I tell people, “don't just look at the hull or the plane, look at all the systems that need to go inside it. The LAV project has a massive impact on indirect jobs across the country as well. The final thing I say to this is the IDEaS (Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security) program. The IDEaS program is something very unique that is having a really good impact on small and medium-sized businesses; as well as universities and individuals who have great ideas. It allows us to throw challenges out to suppliers, where we get to compete the ideas. That's something that industry has been asking for, for a very long time. Imagine trying to guess where DND is going, and then having to spend all this money and time only to find out that's not the direction that we're going. So due to the defence investment plan that we lay out, or the challenges that we throw out, they know exactly what we're looking for. They get to compete early, and we get the benefits of their ingenuity. BATTLE GROUP IN LATVIA CDR: NATO recently celebrated its 70th anniversary, and President Trump used the occasion to once again pressure member countries to increase defence spending up to 2% of their GDP, as they have promised to in the past. Given that Canada's defence spending is only about 1.3% of GDP, where does the country stand in terms of meeting this 2% target? Because, I'm sure our readers in Canada's defence and aerospace industries would be more than happy to see Canada increase defence spending as much as it can. Minister Sajjan: I think we should go back to even before Trump. Many U.S. administrations have been asking NATO member nations to step up when it comes to their defence spending. When we formed the government in 2015, we looked at this. This is one of the reasons why the prime minister asked me to do a thorough defence policy review, because it's only then you're going to find out what is the appropriate defence investment that's actually needed -- not just for us, but for our allies. I think many people don't know that this is probably one of the first defence policies that's actually has come with all the money attached to it. That allows us to do a thorough analysis about which capabilities are important; not just a shopping list of things we need to buy. If you focus on the capabilities, you're able to evolve what's needed. What that has allowed us to do is look at how do we need to be Strong in Canada, Secure in North America, and Engaged in the world; investing in the right capabilities with a 70% increase in spending. That's the way it just turned out, based on our plan. But more importantly, it allows us to make appropriate contributions internationally. If you look at the number of operations our government has authorized, it's quite significant. Just for NATO alone, it includes a battle group in Latvia; plus a naval task force that, from one ship that was being consistently there, were actually taking rotation commanding the naval task force there. We have started air policing again in Europe. We're back in the AWACs program. We have increased our common funding to NATO for a second year. We're taking command of the NATO training mission in Iraq as well. So, when you look at that alone, that's just NATO Operation Artemis, which is this counter-terrorist interdiction in the Arabian Gulf. Plus, we're also doing Operation NEON, which is the sanctions monitoring against North Korea. Then there is the capacity building work that we're doing at different times of the year; including Africa. For the first time, we actually had our submarines deploy for training; one in the Pacific and the other in the Atlantic. So when you look at all the things that we're doing, defence spending has led to something. So that contribution piece is extremely important. Our increased spending is being driven by a national plan that's bringing unity into DND. This allows us to make those contributions in a very meaningful way; not just to NATO, but to coalition partners and the United Nations. CONTRIBUTIONS TO NATO CDR: Given this, do you think NATO should stop focussing on 2% of GDP and instead focus on tangible contribution to international security? Minister Sajjan: I would say that we shouldn't be having strictly a conversation about 2%. That's why the NATO Secretary General has always talked about the three Cs: Cash, capabilities and contributions; because if you need all three of them to be effective. The plan that we have proposed to NATO is something that they welcome. They know that we're going to be investing in types of capability, and what kind of impact that it actually can have. For example, when it comes to the ships that we provide, they know that our Cyclone helicopters are also very good at working with our aircraft when it comes to submarine detection. So it's not just about one ship, it's about what capability we're bringing in. And when you have capabilities from different nations, you're able to look at what type of NATO work that we can do; especially when it comes to our readiness. It is not just us offering up things that we have. These are capabilities that are plugging into a much wider system at NATO that can have an impact and ultimately send a very strong message of deterrence to any adversary – which is why NATO is there. CDR: In last year's interview with CDR, you spoke about the importance of retaining Canadian armed forces members and trying to do better for them and their families. What have you been able to do in the last year and what are you hoping to do going forward? Minister Sajjan: The Number One priority has always been to look after our people and their families. We have made a lot of policy changes in how we support our people. The biggest one that we did right when we launched the defence policy was to make every authorized international operation tax-free for our members. This sends a very strong message to the families. People think that this is about CAF members but it's actually about their families. Now the family can have more flexibility on choices. If their family is younger, they can have more daycare opportunities; making sure a spouse can continue with their career. Relocation has been a significant challenge. A year and a half ago, we dealt with the 10 Biggest Dissatisfiers to relocation and there's a little bit more work needs to be done with that. We've also now been working on what's called Seamless Canada, working with the provinces and the territory to look at where families get posted. For reserve members, their base pay is now equivalent to the regular force. So there's all these things that are happening. One focus that I'm putting more emphasis on this year is infrastructure across Canada. Do we have the right infrastructure for our people; especially when it comes to military family resource centres, health care clinics and accommodations for people? And we have to look at it differently now than we did in the past, because things have significantly changed. We know that in Comox, there is a challenge for people to actually find housing because the vacancy rate is so low. So we're looking at a project to build apartment-style complexes there, and I'll be working with the deputy minister on this. In other places, we are looking at how PLD (Post Living Differential) changes need to be made. The study is almost complete with a much wider analysis. My thought going into this was instead of just looking at the immediate fixes which we have been doing to ease the burden on our members -- like, for example, in places like Cold Lake -- we need to do a thorough analysis done so that, when we make a much wider decision, it can actually last longer. The PLD decision that was made a long time ago is not as relevant today, because it is based on how people live here in Ottawa. Those are the aspects that we're putting a lot more focus into. I think because we're putting a lot of emphasis on looking after people and their families, it's having an impact on retention. How we move people around is also something that the Chief of Defence Staff has been looking at very closely. MORE EMPHASIS ON CYBER SECURITY CDR: You've been Minister of National Defence since 2015. You're now very well versed with the requirements of the job and long past getting to know the ropes and dealing with immediate crises. What do you want to achieve going forward? What do you want your legacy to be at DND? Minister Sajjan: It's not about legacy. We spent a lot of time and very extensive consultations with experts, key people, and more importantly, civilians at the department and the Canadian Armed Forces to come up with the plan for the Defence Policy. And because it comes with money attached, this plan has enough focus and flexibility to adjust to any situation that we have to deal with around the world. My goal is for us to be thinking long-term about how we look after people, how we look at threats and where we need to be to make sure that we have a very strong deterrence. This is one of the reasons why we're putting a lot of emphasis on cyber-security. I'm working very closely with CSE as well. One aspect that I'll be driving home a little bit stronger this time around is going to be innovation. We have such great ingenuity inside the Canadian Armed Forces, but we also have absolutely brilliant people across the country. I want to take a greater look at innovation in the long-term; how we look after people, how we do logistics, and how we keep a technological edge against adversaries. There's a lot of interesting work that's happening. Making sure that we're set up for the future is something that I'm going to be putting a lot more emphasis on. WORKING OUT TO TRANCE CDR: Finally, on a more personal note, we've heard that you do a mean workout to the beat of electronic music, is that correct? Minister Sajjan: Yes! I listened to a lot of a particular type of electronic music known as Euro Trance and I've evolved it a little bit. DJ Markus Schulz is somebody I listen to, and there's a number of other deejays there as well. (Editor's Note: DJ-mixed club music known as Euro Trance is often very uplifting, it is usually around 140 - 145 bpm and has a lot of big rifts. It emerged from the 1990s German techno and hardcore scenes. Leading proponents of this genre have included DJs Armin Van Buuren and Tiesto.) It drives my wife crazy. But I love working out and getting into a high energy pace; it just keeps me motivated. I know it sounds nuts, a 49 year-old listening to Trance. People think I should grow up, but I can't knock everything out of me from high school. CDR: How did you get into this music? Minister Sajjan: I've always liked the mixes and I went to a lot of clubs in my younger days. Then when I was in the UK, they had a really good Euro mix and I used to listen to that a lot. When I was in Germany, I realized that they have a lot of different ways of doing it as well. So, I would try to find that music, which wasn't that popular back then. But now it's everywhere.
