Leonardo CEO is bullish on Europe's defense market

    Embraer’s defense head talks growth areas for the Brazilian giant

    By: Aaron Mehta FARNBOROUGH, England — When Boeing and Embraer announced a tie-up for commercial business, it left quite a few questions about how the defense side of the Brazilian firm would work with the American giant. The answer, early on, is that there will be a new partnership around the KC-390 transport aircraft; but according to Jackson Schneider, president and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, that is just the first step. During an interview at last month's Farnborough International Airshow, Schneider laid out his hopes for the Boeing tie-up as well as potential growth for the company's border security operations and A-29 Super Tucano aircraft. How does the Boeing-Embraer commercial deal impact the discussions you'll be having on the defense side? Defense will be a different transfer. We will decide together which will be the format. But it works as a normal joint venture, normal relationship, normal partnership. The most important thing to me in this dimension is [the interest] that both companies are dedicating for the programs. It is clear Boeing and Embraer is dedicated to investigate and identify the opportunities together. A lot of analysts expect the two companies to start in on some sort of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance/early-warning special-mission aircraft designs. Do you anticipate the same? I think that we have very interesting applications in terms of business jets — very creative. We have already had some solutions that could go to market for training, for medical evacuation, for airport inspections, but there are many other opportunities, alternatives that we can explore together, also in this joint venture.     Meggitt expands involvement in KFX programme

    Jon Grevatt, Bangkok - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly UK company Meggitt has increased its involvement on the South Korean programme to develop the KFX multirole fighter aircraft through a new supply contract announced on 10 September. In a press release, Meggitt said it will develop an engine vibration monitoring unit (EVMU) for KFX prototypes currently under construction by prime contractor Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI). Chris Allen, president of Meggitt Sensing Systems, said, “This contract builds on the development work we have been undertaking with KAI on innovative technology for the KFX.     Dassault dévoile le remplaçant du Rafale

    Le salon Euronaval (Le Bourget, 23 au 26 octobre 2018), est l'occasion pour l'avionneur de Saint-Cloud de lever un coin de voile sur son concept de « New Generation Fighter ». Ce NGF est destiné à occuper une place essentielle dans le projet franco-allemand SCAF (Système de Combat Aérien Futur) développé par Airbus et Dassault, et dont la France (comprendre Dassault) aura la maitrise d'oeuvre. La maquette présentée sur le stand Dassault à Euronaval montre un avion piloté, sans dérive, sans canard, avec des entrées d'air trapézoïdales à la mode du F-22. L'accent est mis sur la furtivité et l'appareil disposerait en bonne logique d'une soute pour emporter son armement. Les équations qui dictent la furtivité aux ondes électromagnétiques étant les mêmes pour tout le monde, il n'est pas étonnant que les avions existant ou en projet reprennent les mêmes solutions. La maquette de Dassault se distingue par l'absence de dérive : l'avionneur français maîtrise le sujet depuis qu'il fait voler le Neuron. Le démonstrateur de drone de combat lui a également mis le pied à l'étrier en matière de furtivité. Le NGF ayant vocation à succéder au Rafale, il devrait logiquement exister en deux versions : terrestre et embarquée. Ce qui explique sa présence au salon Euronaval...
