Le drone "Patroller sera armé, l'armée de Terre le souhaite" (Chef d'état-major de l'armée de Terre)

Le nouveau chef d'état-major de l'armée de Terre, le général Thierry Burkhard, a annoncé que le Patroller "sera armé". En 2023, l'armée de Terre disposera d'environ 1.200 drones couvrant plusieurs segments capacitaires.

L'armée de Terre va armer le drone Patroller, comme l'a récemment écrit La Tribune. C'est aujourd'hui officiel. Le nouveau chef d'état-major de l'armée de Terre, le général Thierry Burkhard, l'a annoncé lors de son audition le 16 octobre au Sénat. "Le Patroller sera armé parce que l'armée de terre le souhaite mais sa mission première ne sera pas d'appuyer nos troupes", affirme-t-il. En outre, selon nos informations, Safran a d'ailleurs récemment obtenu la notification d'un contrat d'une durée de 18 mois pour une étude de levée de risques pour l'armement du Patroller.

"Nous faisons aussi preuve d'imagination et d'anticipation en armant le Patroller alors que ce n'était pas prévu au départ. Le Patroller sera donc armé parce que l'armée de terre le souhaite mais sa mission première ne sera pas d'appuyer nos troupes. Cependant, il bénéficiera de cette capacité. Par conséquent, si un Patroller découvre un poste de commandement ennemi à détruire, il doit pouvoir le faire", explique le général Thierry Burkhard.

Le choix de l'armement s'est porté sur la roquette guidée laser de 68mm de Thales, qui équipe déjà l'hélicoptère Tigre. Elle a été préférée à la version sol-air du MMP (Missile moyenne portée), le MHT de MBDA. Pourquoi ? La roquette guidée laser est dimensionnée aux besoins de l'armée de Terre en étant parfaitement adaptée à des objectifs rencontrés par le Patroller lors de ses missions de surveillance pour réaliser des tirs sur des cibles d'opportunité (pick-up, sniper...). La roquette est également beaucoup moins chère et plus légère que le MMP.

1.200 drones en service dans l'armée de Terre

L'armée de Terre aura mis d'ici à la fin de l'année, quatre nouveaux types de drones en opération : le drone tactique Patroller (Safran), les mini-drones NX70 (Novadem) et Spy Ranger (Thales) et, enfin, le nano-drone Black Hornet 3 (l'américain FLIR). L'armée de Terre disposera "à terme de 1.300 drones, allant du nano drone de quelques grammes au drone tactique dont les performances permettront d'appuyer l'engagement d'une unité au combat dans la durée et sur de fortes distances", avait expliqué le prédécesseur du CEMAT, le général Bosser. Le projet de LPM prévoit la livraison d'ici à 2025 des trois premiers systèmes de drone tactique Patroller ainsi qu'une commande pour équiper l'armée de terre à hauteur de cinq systèmes à l'horizon 2030. L'armée de Terre souhaite disposer de cinq systèmes et vingt-huit drones tactiques de ce type en 2030.

Le général Thierry Burkhard marche bien évidemment dans les pas de son prédécesseur dans le domaine des drones. "Dans cet environnement aéroterrestre, les drones ont déjà toute leur place", observe-t-il. D'autant que comme il le rappelle elle a été "précurseur dans l'emploi des drones". L'armée de Terre renouvelle son segment tactique avec le Patroller et élargira sa capacité jusqu'aux plus bas échelons des thé'tres d'opérations avec les nano-drones. "L'armée de Terre possède aujourd'hui environ 160 drones. En 2023, elle en comptera environ 1.200", précise le général Thierry Burkhard

Thales a déjà construit un prototype dans le cadre de ce programme d'armement innovant. Le système de lutte anti-mines futur (ou SLAM-F) se précise. Mardi 3 novembre, le gouvernement a officialisé “le lancement en réalisation” du programme d'armement. Dès 2022, la Marine nationale s'équipera de drones sous-marins et de surface pour affronter la guerre des mines. À quoi va servir le SLAM-F ? “Le SLAM-F remplacera à terme tous les moyens actuels de guerre des mines (chasseurs de mines tripartites, b'timents remorqueurs de sonars, b'timents bases de plongeurs démineurs)”, rappelle le ministère des Armées dans un communiqué. Concrètement, il permettra aux forces françaises de neutraliser des mines à distance à l'aide de drones, afin de ne plus exposer des plongeurs ou des marins. “Ce système nous permettra de détecter des objets de la taille d'une carte bleue – c'est 30 fois plus petit qu'avec nos moyens actuels. Notre capacité de détection et de neutralisation ira jusqu'à 300 mètres de fond, contre seulement une centaine de mètres avec nos moyens actuels", détaillait la ministre des Armées, Florence Parly, lors d'un discours en mai. Les drones démineurs du programme auront notamment pour mission d'assurer la sécurité d'unités stratégiques de l'armée française : celle des sous-marins nucléaires lanceurs d'engins (SNLE), piliers de la dissuasion nucléaire, ou encore celle du porte-avions Charles de Gaulle. Le ministère des Armées mentionne aussi des usages pour protéger l'accès aux ports français, soutenir le déploiement d'une force d'action navale, sécuriser l'évacuation de ressortissants français ou participer à la prévention de crises. Un programme d'armement à plusieurs étages Comme le système de combat aérien du futur (SCAF), le SLAM-F comportera plusieurs volets. Au coeur de cette architecture, on retrouve des systèmes de drones capables d'être opérés depuis la terre ferme ou depuis un navire militaire dédié. La France et le Royaume-Uni collaborent depuis 2012 sur ce volet baptisé MMCM (pour “Maritime mines counter measures”). En 2015, le groupe français de défense Thales avait été désigné chef de fil industriel de ce volet. “L'étude de définition et la réalisation des prototypes du système de drones ont été confiés à Thales, dont la société Études et constructions aéronautiques [ECA, filiale du groupe Gorgé] sera le principal sous-traitant français”, confirme le ministère des Armées dans son communiqué. Thales avait déjà testé un chasseur de mines ultra-moderne en 2019 en collaboration avec la Marine nationale. Le groupe français fait figure de champion dans ce domaine. "Plus de 30 marines dans le monde sont équipées de sonars de guerre des mines Thales", soulignait Florence Parly en mai. Des livraisons prévues jusqu'en 2030 Le SLAM-F contient trois autres volets : des b'timents de guerre des mines (BGDM) dédiés à la conduite et à la mise en oeuvre des drones, des b'timents bases de plongeurs démineurs nouvelle génération (BBPD NG) et enfin un système d'exploitation des données de guerre des mines (SEDGM). Dans son communiqué, le ministère ne nomme pas d'autres entreprises participant à ce projet. “L'organisation industrielle de SLAM-F sera progressivement définie lors de l'attribution des marchés afférents aux différents volets du programme”, indique simplement le gouvernement. Le calendrier du SLAM-F prévoit la livraison de huit systèmes de drones anti-mines à partir de 2022.     The Air Force’s experimental navigation satellite cleared for fabrication

    Nathan Strout WASHINGTON - The U.S. Air Force has completed critical design review of an experimental navigation satellite, clearing the way for fabrication to begin and keeping the launch on track for 2022. The Air Force Research Laboratory's Navigation Technology Satellite 3 (NTS-3) is one of the Air Force's first Vanguard programs — platforms that can delivers remarkable new capabilities to the war fighter. NTS-3 is being developed to demonstrate new positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) technologies that will inform how future GPS satellites work. AFRL plans to operate the satellite in geosynchronous orbit for one year to experiment with new PNT signals and test new architectures. Beyond the space-based test vehicle itself, NTS-3 will also demonstrate new ground-based command and control as well as new software-defined radios. And, once on orbit, NTS-3 could provide immediate support to the war fighter. The experimental satellite will augment the GPS constellation from geosynchronous orbit, providing a geographically focused signal. “The NTS-3 Vanguard is an experimental, end-to-end demonstration of agile, resilient space-based positioning, navigation, and timing,” Arlen Biersgreen, the NTS-3 program manager, said in a statement. “It has the potential for game-changing advancements to the way the Air Force provides these critical capabilities to war fighters across the Department of Defense.” L3Harris is the prime contractor on NTS-3, and was awarded an $84 million contract for the experimental satellite in 2018. With the critical design review complete, the company can now move forward with fabrication, demonstration and testing. The NTS-3 contract includes a follow-on option for production of an entire constellation, if the Air Force chooses to exercise it. “Collaboration with our customers has enabled us to move rapidly through important milestones to design this experimental satellite,” said Ed Zoiss, president of space and airborne systems at L3Harris. “Our goal is to deliver new signals to support rapidly evolving warfighter missions.” Due to scheduling, NTS-3 technology is unlikely to be included on the any of the GPS III satellites in production, but it will likely inform aspects of the subsequent GPS IIIF satellites which are set to go on orbit in the late 2020s.
