Indonesian Air Force places order for eight additional H225Ms

The Indonesian Air Force has ordered eight additional twin-engine multirole H225M helicopters as part of the country's fleet-strengthening initiative for a combat search and rescue-capable fleet.

Indonesia, Under the agreement between the Indonesian Ministry of Defence and PT Dirgantara Indonesia (Persero) (PTDI), the 11-ton combat-proven helicopters will be delivered to the air force upon reassembly and completion of the mission equipment outfitting and customisation by PTDI at its facility in Bandung, Indonesia. These additional helicopters will join the air force's existing fleet of six H225Ms to perform similar combat search and rescue missions.

Airbus Helicopters and Indonesia have an enduring relationship of over 40 years dating back to 1976 when PTDI first obtained a licence to produce the NBO-105 helicopter. Specifically on the H225, PTDI became a key supplier of the helicopter's rear fuselage and main airframe in 2008, with full production in place in Indonesia by 2011. The two companies expanded the industrial co-operation in 2017, to include support and services dedicated for the Indonesian military fleet of helicopters.

The H225M is currently in service across the globe with 88 helicopters delivered to-date. It recently surpassed the 100,000 flight hour milestone, following its first delivery to the French Air Force in 2006. Since then the H225M has proven its reliability and durability in multiple combat environments and crisis areas.

A member of the multi-role Super Puma family of helicopters, this military variant is currently operational in France, Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, and has recently been ordered by Hungary, Kuwait and Singapore.

    The new Black Hornet 3 nano unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is being presented by FLIR at Eurosatory 2018, being held in Paris on 11-15 June, while the previous Black Hornet 2 is being shown integrated into vehicles. At Eurosatory, the Black Hornet is displayed on a Patria AMV armoured vehicle and a BAE Systems CV90 infantry fighting vehicle. Arne Skjaerpe, vice-president of unmanned aerial system (UAS) sales and operations at FLIR, told Jane's the Black Hornet 3, which was announced in a 5 June FLIR press release, has a new, modular air vehicle which can carry new day/night sensors with better perceived picture quality and new software, which he said was a “step change” compared with the Black Hornet 2. He reported that there are 30 customers for the Black Hornet, including many NATO countries, with the US Army's Soldier Borne Sensor programme having ordered the first batch of Black Hornet 3s for USD2.6 million. Other customers of the latest version of the UAS are the Australian and French armed forces. On 11 June French special forces equipped with Black Hornets participated in the rehearsal for a live demonstration to be held at Eurosatory on 12 June. The Black Hornet 3 UAV weighs 32-33 g, compared with 18 g for the Black Hornet 2, and both share the same base station and screen, according to Skjaerpe. He said FLIR would continue to provide service and maintenance support for the Black Hornet 2. A vehicle reconnaissance system is being developed for the Black Hornet to give vehicles greater situational awareness and targeting capabilities, according to Skaerjpe.     Germany’s plan to boost defense spending hits a snag

    By: Sebastian Sprenger COLOGNE, Germany — Germany may be unable to deliver on its pledge to increase the defense budget due to smaller-than-expected economic growth, according to a new Finance Ministry analysis. The projections peg the military budget to be several billion euros short of the trajectory to meet the government's goal of reaching 1.5 percent of gross domestic product by 2024. Analysts even see the current spending curve unable to sustain 1.35 percent in the years ahead. NATO members in 2014 agreed to boost their defense spending to 2 percent of GDP within 10 years. Germany's defense budget is roughly €43 billion (U.S. $49 billion) for 2019, or about 1.2 percent of GDP. That is a boost of €4 billion over the previous year. Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen on Monday said Germany remains committed to hitting the self-declared 1.5 percent target in 2024. She portrayed the Finance Ministry's analysis as a mere first step toward a budget proposal negotiated by Cabinet secretaries. The government is expected to unveil such a plan in late March. The Trump administration has often criticized Germany for underspending on defense, arguing Berlin rides on American coattails when it comes to security. News that the country's spending target is at risk is sure to embolden the narrative in Washington that Europe is somehow taking advantage of the United States. It could weaken the negotiating position of German government delegates at two high-profile events in mid-February: a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, and the Munich Security Conference. The Finance Ministry's economic outlook estimates that agencies will have to reconcile new spending priorities within their previously established budget targets.
