    US Army to bring new vehicle protection technologies to fleet as early as 2020

    By: Jen Judson WASHINGTON — The U.S. Army is planning to bring new vehicle protection technologies to the fleet as early as 2020 to include reactive armor tiles, as well as laser warning and signature management capabilities, according to Col. Glenn Dean, the program manager for the service's Stryker combat vehicle. Dean is also in charge of bringing active protection system capabilities to the current fleet. The service has been rigorously testing APS for the Abrams tank, Stryker and Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Israeli company Rafael has already been chosen to provide an interim APS system for Abrams. Other systems are being evaluated for Stryker and Bradley. In addition to the service's plans to rapidly field interim systems for its combat fleet, it is preparing to evaluate other kinetic energy defeat capabilities, Dean told reporters in an Aug. 24 interview. The service recently put out a request for proposals to industry for state-of-the-art capabilities for defeating tank-fired, long-rod kinetic energy penetrators.     Embraer and Boeing Welcome Brazilian Government Approval of Strategic Partnership

    SAO PAULO and CHICAGO, Jan. 10, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Embraer [B3: EMBR3, NYSE: ERJ] and Boeing [NYSE: BA] have welcomed approval by the Government of Brazil of the strategic partnership that will position both companies to accelerate growth in global aerospace markets. The government's approval comes after the two companies last month approved terms for the joint venture that will be made up of the commercial aircraft and services operations of Embraer. Boeing will hold an 80 percent ownership stake in the new company and Embraer will hold the remaining 20 percent. The companies have also agreed to the terms of another joint venture to promote and develop new markets for the multi-mission medium airlift KC-390. Under the terms of this proposed partnership, Embraer will own a 51 percent stake in the joint venture, with Boeing owning the remaining 49 percent. Once Embraer's Board of Directors ratifies its prior approval, the two companies will then execute definitive transaction documents. The closing of the transaction will be subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Assuming the approvals are received in a timely manner, the transaction is intended to close by the end of 2019.     Four European armored vehicles qualify for Polish competition

    By: Jaroslaw Adamowski KIELCE, Poland — Poland has accepted four offers to move forward in a competition to potentially provide several hundred armored personnel carriers to the country's military, the Ministry of Defence announced. Out of the 12 vehicles submitted in the initial stage of the tender, the ministry accepted four APCs: Fortress MK2, jointly offered by France's Arquus and Poland's H. Cegielski-Poznan plant. Hawkei, developed by French firm Thales. Patriot II, offered by Polish manufacturer Huta Stalowa Wola and Czech defense group Tatra Export. Tur V, developed by Polish vehicle-maker AMZ Kutno. The Fortress MK2 weighs 14.5 tons, and its engine is enabled with a 340-horsepower (250-kilowatt) capacity. The Hawkei is a 7-ton vehicle, and its engine offers 268-horsepower. The Patriot II weighs 13-17 tons, depending on the version, and its engine enabled with 362-402-horsepower capacity. Weighing 9 tons, the Tur V is fitted with an engine that offers a 322-horsepower capacity. By the end of this year, the Polish ministry is expected to provide the tender's participants with detailed technical specifications.
