In 2022, IDEaS will again be looking to the skies! After hosting a Sandbox in 2019 on Countering Unmanned Aerial Systems (CUAS), IDEaS will be inviting innovators to bring their ‘A' game in a new call for applications in the New Year. Come show us how your CUAS prototypes can solve the challenge and be integrated into the broader military command and control system. The original call sought technologies that could detect and/or defeat Micro and Mini Unmanned Aerial Systems, for which we are now seeking improved performance and integration. Stay tuned for opportunities to join and collaborate in Innovation Networks 5G research clusters!

Innovation Networks

In Fall 2021, IDEaS invited Canadian Innovators to submit a Letter of Intent for the development of research clusters (called Micro-nets) under the newest Innovation Networks challenge: Faster, Stronger, More Secure: Advancing 5G capabilities and concepts for Defence and Security. The focus of the Micro-nets will be to conduct research to address DND/CAF needs with applications for:​

  • Architectures for Defence and Security Operations;
  • Assured Performance and Security; or
  • Applications and Sensors.

Eligible Innovators screened in will be invited by the IDEaS Program to submit their Full Proposals over a period of 6 weeks.

IDEaS will be posting the list of all screened in applicants in January 2022, including their proposal title, and lead researcher. We encourage organizations to build their network and reach out to be part of these growing micro-nets.

Each funded micro-net will be eligible to receive up to $1.5M over 3 years to foster the development of a critical mass of researchers, highly qualified personnel, and expertise within the Canadian innovation community.

Les micro-réseaux 5G de Réseaux d'innovation commencent à prendre forme en janvier

Innovation NetworksÀ partir de janvier 2022, les candidats retenus au dernier défi des réseaux d'innovation 5G auront la possibilité de commencer à unir leurs forces pour créer leurs micro-réseaux de recherche proposés.

Les participants sélectionnés pour la phase de proposition du défi Plus rapide, plus fort, plus sécurisé : avancer les capacités et les concepts 5G pour la défense et la sécurité seront publiés sur le site Web d'IDEeS en janvier.

Le titre de la proposition, l'organisation et le chercheur principal seront partagés afin que les candidats puissent commencer le processus de collaboration pour construire leurs micro-réseaux.

Chaque micro-réseau financé sera admissible à recevoir jusqu'à 1,5 million de dollars (sur 3 ans) pour favoriser le développement d'une masse critique de chercheurs, de personnel hautement qualifié et d'expertise au sein de la communauté canadienne de l'innovation.

Les participants doivent soumettre leurs propositions complètes au programme IDEeS dans les 6 semaines suivant la réception de la notification de la réussite de leur candidature.

    Liberty Defense to test HEXWAVE at Toronto Pearson

    Liberty Defense Holdings Ltd., a leading concealed weapons detection solutions company, announced that it has signed a collaboration agreement with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) to beta test HEXWAVE. GTAA operates Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, west of Toronto in Ontario. Toronto Pearson is Canada's largest airport facility, welcoming 49.5 million passengers in 2018 alone. Toronto Pearson will be the first airport to partner with Liberty to test HEXWAVE. “Aviation security has been a key driver of the development of new security technologies and services globally, helping travelers to feel safe in an ever-changing threat environment,” said Bill Riker, CEO of Liberty Defense. HEXWAVE uses 3D radar imaging and artificial intelligence, primarily to detect and identify weapons, as well as other threats and anomalies. It enables security teams to detect these threats at the perimeter of a property without obstructing the movement of large groups of people. HEXWAVE enables a layered defense strategy, which provides security teams with more time to manage threats. “It is not our intention to replace the existing security measures in airports, but to extend the security perimeter of aviation facilities by providing security between the curb and airport gate, which is a great example of how a layered defense approach can be implemented. Furthermore, HEXWAVE's ability to operate in both indoor and outdoor environments further enables the security parameter be expanded, in combination with its modular and scalable design, which will help make transportation infrastructure, such as airports, safer,” added Riker. “The GTAA is committed to a proactive security philosophy that stays ahead of emerging threats across our aviation infrastructure to minimize risk for passengers, employees and property. We track emerging technologies with the goal of balancing our operational security needs with overall customer service to make moving through Toronto Pearson a positive experience,” said Dwayne Macintosh, Director of Corporate Safety and Security for the GTAA. This beta testing phase is a key part of HEXWAVE's development process. The incremental testing of the system in actual facilities can help to ensure that the product is aligned with market requirements. “HEXWAVE caught my attention with its capability to detect both metallic and non-metallic objects and the flexibility for its deployment across the airport. We work with our partners to evaluate their products and evaluate how they can complement our operational reality. We're excited to work with Liberty Defense to see how we can make HEXWAVE a success at Toronto Pearson,” added Macintosh. This beta testing phase is a key part of HEXWAVE's development process. Testing the system in operational and diverse facilities can help to ensure that it is aligned to market requirements. Beta testing is expected to begin later in 2019 and progress into 2020.     New opportunity for Canadian students to build and launch their own satellites

    Today the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced the launch of the CubeSats Initiative in Canada for STEM (CUBICS), a new opportunity for post-secondary professors and students to engage in a real space mission. CUBICS challenges teams to develop projects that help advance scientific knowledge in areas such as climate change. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) plans to award a total of $3.4M in grants to up to 12 teams to design, build and launch an end-to-end CubeSat or develop a standalone scientific instrument or experiment. Building upon lessons learned from the Canadian CubeSat Project (CCP), the CSA intends to launch a new CUBICS opportunity every three years to continue to stimulate student learning for years to come. CUBICS aims to be more reflective of the needs of new and experienced student teams led by a professor, allowing them to engage in a mission adapted to their level of comfort, expertise and readiness. CUBICS is one of the CSA's initiatives that aim to equip students with the experience, knowledge and skills to become sought-after candidates for positions in Canada's space sector workforce.
