Leading UK space industry consortium calls for greater SME engagement for future satcom services

Stevenage, June 16, 2020 – The UK's space industry leader Airbus, has teamed with KBR, Leidos UK, Northrop Grumman and QinetiQ to bring new thinking to future space solutions and to launch the Open Innovation – Space initiative. The aim of Open Innovation – Space is to further increase SME involvement in UK future satellite communications services and space activities creating high value jobs and growth across the UK.

The consortium, comprising the UK leader in space and sovereign military satellite communication services, and leading defence companies in their fields, have extensive experience in mission critical communication services and associated space, ground and management segments. With proven track records of modernising defence services, the consortium partners already engage with many SMEs to serve government and commercial customers. Open Innovation – Space will look to significantly raise this SME engagement to accelerate regional recovery by broadening potential investment in novel solutions and ideas. Companies from across the UK are being encouraged to participate with a dedicated portal at www.openinnovationspace.uk to engage with the team.

    Pentagon's Lord blames KC-46A's fixed-price contract structure for further programme issues

    Pat Host The Pentagon's top acquisition executive blames the Boeing KC-46A Pegasus aerial refuelling tanker's fixed-price contract structure for the programme's ongoing issues. Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire said during a 1 October hearing that Boeing cancelled a 2 October KC-46A delivery to the 157th Air Refueling Wing (ARW) in New Hampshire due to electrical problems with the aircraft. Ellen Lord, under secretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment (A&S), said in response that the root cause of the KC-46A's problems is the contract type that was awarded to Boeing. Lord said that one issue is the technical solution that was the aircraft's original design, which is now being redesigned. The programme, she said, also has a myriad of manufacturing issues including ongoing foreign object debris (FOD) problems. The programme, Lord said, has an engineering design and execution issue as well as a manufacturing problem. Boeing's fixed-price contract structure, previously lauded as an example of improved government contracting, means the company pays the Pentagon for cost overruns. The contract structure was considered an improvement over cost-plus contracting, where the government reimburses the contractor for cost overruns. One expert said that Boeing paying for cost overruns on the KC-46A disincentivises the company from improving its performance.     Saab Receives Order for Components for US Marine Corps G/ATOR Radar

    December 9, 2019 - Saab has received an order for components and subsystems for full rate production systems for the US Marine Corps Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar (G/ATOR), which has the US designation AN/TPS-80. The initial order value is USD 31.9 million and the contract includes options for additional systems over a five-year period. G/ATOR provides the US Marine Corps with capability for air surveillance, air defence, and ground weapon locating missions in one single ground-based radar solution. Saab received the order from Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, who is the prime contractor for G/ATOR to the US Marine Corps. Saab's order includes options for additional sets of assemblies and associated spares. Deliveries are anticipated to take place between 2020 and 2024. “We look forward to continue strengthening the next generation US radar programme with our radar expertise and to further deepen our collaboration with Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation as part of the G/ATOR delivery team,” says Anders Carp, Senior Vice President and head of Saab's business area Surveillance.
