Le Royaume-Uni développe un chasseur piloté à distance

Le ministère de la défense britannique a annoncé le 25 janvier le lancement d'un prototype de chasseur piloté à distance. Ce projet, connu sous le nom de « Mosquito », est intégré au programme LANCA (Lightweight Affordable Novel Combat Aircraft). Une enveloppe de 30 M£ lui sera allouée, afin d'aboutir à un premier prototype d'ici trois ans. Un démonstrateur à l'échelle 1 devrait pouvoir réaliser des essais en vol d'ici fin 2023. Spirit AeroSystems a été choisi pour diriger l'équipe de recherche, dont Northrop Grumman UK fait également partie. « Nous adoptons une approche révolutionnaire, en nous tournant vers une combinaison inédite faisant collaborer des essaims de drones et des chasseurs sans équipage, comme Mosquito, aux côtés d'avions de combat pilotés comme le Tempest, qui transformera l'espace de combat d'une manière inédite », a déclaré le chef d'Etat Major de la Royal Air Force, l'Air Chief Marshal Mike Wigton.

    Lockheed Martin wins FFG(X) combat systems integration contract

    Lockheed Martin has received a contract from the US Navy to serve as the combat system ship integration and test agent for the future Guided Missile Frigate (FFG(X)) ship programme. Valued at up to $125m, the contract will involve the overall integration of the combat system elements into the frigate ship design. Under the contract, Lockheed Martin will also complete waterfront testing to validate the installation. Scope includes integration engineering support, test planning, waterfront ship integration and testing, post-delivery engineering support. Lockheed Martin Surface Navy Integration Systems programme director Chris Minster said: “The US Navy will experience substantial efficiency by utilising the existing processes, tools, and experience of the Lockheed Martin ship integration and test team. “While minimising ship impact and cost, our ship integration and test team will enable the successful integration of the combat system elements into the future frigate ship design.” The company is counting on its ship integration and test experience including Aegis Ticonderoga class guided missile cruisers and Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers to successfully deliver the contract. Majority of the work will be performed at the selected FFG(X) shipbuilder location. The company will also deliver engineering services for ship integration. Lockheed Martin will also deliver around 30% of work at its Rotary and Mission Systems plant in Moorestown, New Jersey. The ten-year contract includes one base year of performance and nine option years. The contract work is expected to be completed in June 2025. Last month, the navy issued a request for proposals (RfP) for the detail design and construction (DD&C) contract of the next-generation FFG(X) ships.     Boeing gets another $827M charge on the KC-46 program

    By: Valerie Insinna WASHINGTON — Boeing took a $827 million hit as cost overruns continue for the KC-46 tanker program, the company announced Wednesday. About $551 million of the pre-tax charge was caused by new expenses associated with designing and integrating a new Remote Vision System for the tanker as part of an April agreement with the Air Force. The remainder of the charge reflected “productivity inefficiencies and COVID-19 related factory disruption,” according to a news release. KC-46 production stopped for about three weeks over the past month due to a temporary shutdown at Boeing facilities in the Seattle area — including the factory in Everett, Wash., where the tanker is produced. With the new charge, Boeing has now racked up about $4.6 billion in cost overruns over the life of the KC-46 program. Those expenses must be completely paid by Boeing under the terms of the $4.9 billion fixed-price firm contract it agreed to in 2011. The bill comes as Boeing contends with the continued grounding of the 737 MAX and instability to the air travel market posed by COVID-19, which has led to lost orders and disruptions throughout the company's production lines. But the RVS deal struck in April could potentially mark a new chapter for the tanker program, which has been mired in disputes between Boeing and the Air Force for years. The RVS — integrated by Boeing with cameras and sensors from Collins Aerospace — feeds live video and other data to the boom operator, who is able to use those cues to pump gas into another aircraft. But the Air Force has complained that the system does not work properly in all lighting conditions, leading to an increased risk of the KC-46 accidentally scraping the aircraft receiving fuel. Under the terms of the new deal, Boeing will make incremental hardware and software improvements to the existing system, but it will also design a new “RVS 2.0” with high-definition color cameras, better displays and improved computing systems not on the market when the first RVS was developed. During an earnings call with investors on Wednesday, Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun said the defense market continues to be healthy with solid demand. Overall, first quarter revenue for Boeing's defense sector decreased to $6 billion, down from about $6.6 billion in 2019.     CENTCOM looks to industry for data-centric network

    Andrew Eversden WASHINGTON — U.S. Central Command needs industry's help in designing a network infrastructure that provides improved secure information sharing with allies and partners, its top IT official said Sept. 17. Brig. Gen. Jeth Rey, director of command and control, communications, and computer systems at CENTCOM, said his team is working to establish a data-centric architecture that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to limit access to data based only on what a user needs. “What I have the team looking at is working in that transport agnostic, looking at a data-centric connection, and then how can we then use attributes to then release information to that person who is trying to access the data. And so that's where data centricity is at the end of the day trying to use machine learning and AI,” Rey said at the 2020 Intelligence and National Security Summit. “That's where we need help from industry.” Rey compared CENTCOM's need to the service provided by banks, where a person logs in with credentials, and then the bank reaches into its massive database, pulling out only the information specific to that person. CENTCOM, the largest combatant command, also has data and information sharing requirements with more than 50 nations, adding another degree of difficulty in developing a secure architecture where users can only access the necessary data. “We here at CENTCOM are going to work with partners, and we need to share our information with them,” Rey said. “We need that help in order to display from a single document with multiple security measures ... but release only that information on that document to that person by their credential.” The need Rey described is similar to an architecture developed by the U.S. intelligence community for its data access needs. That platform, known as IC GovCloud, enabled users to store data in one place and the community to implement security measures to limit personnel access to what they “need to know,” said Greg Smithberger, chief information officer at the National Security Agency and director of the agency's Capabilities Directorate. “We built the GovCloud from the ground up with this thought in mind so that with the data comes knowledge of where it came from and what the rules are in terms of how it needs to be handled and who has the need to know.
