Government approves Boeing's participation in upcoming fighter competition

OTTAWA — The federal government says Boeing has been approved to participate in an upcoming competition to replace Canada's CF-18s, though the U.S. aerospace giant says it still hasn't decided whether it will actually bid.

Public Services and Procurement Canada says Boeing, which makes the Super Hornet jet, is one of five companies approved as potential bidders in the multibillion-dollar competition to deliver 88 new aircraft.

Boeing had remained on the fence when asked whether it would throw its hat in the ring, saying it was waiting to see how the government would run the competition, which will formally kick off next year.

The comments appeared to be in response to the government's plan to change future competitions for military equipment, including fighter jets, to penalize companies deemed to be hurting Canada's economic interests.

The proposed change is believed to be a direct response to Boeing's complaints against Bombardier over the latter's C Series passenger jet, which were largely thrown out last month by the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Weapons system support contract to help protect Canadian ships, sailors

News Release From National Defence January 26, 2018 – Esquimalt, B.C. – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces The Government of Canada is committed to providing the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces with the equipment they need, as outlined in Canada's new defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged. Today, the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, announced the award of a contract in support of weapons systems that will protect Canadian ships and sailors over the next two decades. Valued at $704 million, this contract will also benefit Canadians, as it is expected to create and maintain more than 450 well-paid, skilled jobs across the country. Under this contract, Raytheon Canada Limited will upgrade and support 21 Close-In Weapons Systems for the Royal Canadian Navy. These rapid-fire, radar-guided gun systems provide the most effective naval self-defence system available against close-in threats such as missiles, small ships, and aircraft. These systems are currently in use on the Navy's Halifax-class frigates, and will also be installed on the Protecteur-class joint support ships following their construction. Quotes “Today's announcement is aligned with the goals we set out in Strong, Secure, Engaged – we are making strategic investments in the Royal Canadian Navy that will help protect our sailors as they conduct the full spectrum of operations in a modern security environment.” – Minister of National Defence, Harjit S. Sajjan “As a result of the government's ITB policy, Raytheon Canada Limited will make important investments in Canada to support well-paying, middle class jobs, foster economic growth and help spur innovation across the country in small and medium enterprises. That's how we ensure innovation works for all Canadians.” – Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains Quick Facts The Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) In-Service Support contract will be valid until late 2037, and comprises an initial 10-year service period with three options of five, three and two additional years, respectively. The CIWS is the world's most widely deployed close-in weapons system and currently in service with 24 nations. This level of interoperability will allow the Navy to take advantage of future improvements made by our allies. The Industrial and Technological Benefits Policy (ITB), including the Value Proposition, applies to this contract and will support the growth of a sustainable Canadian defence and marine industry. In addition, Raytheon Canada Limited has committed to investing in Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises and research and development activities. New Call for Countering Unmanned Aerial Systems Coming // Nouvel appel de propositions pour vaincre les systèmes aériens sans pilote à venir bientôt

New Call for Countering Unmanned Aerial Systems Coming In 2022, IDEaS will again be looking to the skies! After hosting a Sandbox in 2019 on Countering Unmanned Aerial Systems (CUAS), IDEaS will be inviting innovators to bring their ‘A' game in a new call for applications in the New Year. Come show us how your CUAS prototypes can solve the challenge and be integrated into the broader military command and control system. The original call sought technologies that could detect and/or defeat Micro and Mini Unmanned Aerial Systems, for which we are now seeking improved performance and integration. Visit the 2019 CUAS Results page to learn more on how the event unfolded and what we learned. Stay tuned for the new call to launch in January 2022. Stay tuned for opportunities to join and collaborate in Innovation Networks 5G research clusters! In Fall 2021, IDEaS invited Canadian Innovators to submit a Letter of Intent for the development of research clusters (called Micro-nets) under the newest Innovation Networks challenge: Faster, Stronger, More Secure: Advancing 5G capabilities and concepts for Defence and Security. The focus of the Micro-nets will be to conduct research to address DND/CAF needs with applications for: Architectures for Defence and Security Operations; Assured Performance and Security; or Applications and Sensors. Eligible Innovators screened in will be invited by the IDEaS Program to submit their Full Proposals over a period of 6 weeks. IDEaS will be posting the list of all screened in applicants in January 2022, including their proposal title, and lead researcher. We encourage organizations to build their network and reach out to be part of these growing micro-nets. Each funded micro-net will be eligible to receive up to $1.5M over 3 years to foster the development of a critical mass of researchers, highly qualified personnel, and expertise within the Canadian innovation community. Please join our mailing list to be the first to hear of this opportunity for collaborate.
