U.S. Navy Awards Sikorsky Contract To Build 35 CH-53K® Helicopters
The agreement includes 12 U.S. Marine Corps Lot 7 aircraft, 15 U.S. Marine Corps Lot 8 aircraft, and eight aircraft for Israel.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The next generation of executive transport helicopter for the president of the United States is planned for Initial Operational Capability (IOC) in July 2021, a Navy spokeswoman said, but the decision of when to place the aircraft in service will be determined by the White House.
The VH-92A, built by Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., a Lockheed Martin company, was selected in 2014 to replace the VH-3D and VH-60N helicopter fleet used to transport the president and other government executives. Six VH-92As were ordered in 2019. Followed by six more in February 2020. Total inventory will be 23 VH-92A aircraft, comprised of 21 operational fleet aircraft and two test aircraft.
The presidential helicopter fleet is operated by Marine Helicopter Squadron One, based at Marine Corps Air Station Quantico, Va., with a detachment at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington.
“Government testing to validate system performance and prepare for Initial Operational Test and Evaluation is progressing on schedule and will support an Initial Operational Capability (IOC) planned for July 2021,” the Navy spokeswoman said. “The VH-92A will enter service post IOC at the determination of the White House Military Office.”

Ces pièces seront, en effet, prélevées sur les 76 Caesar en service dans l'armée de Terre, qui prévoit d'en avoir 109 dans dix ans (neufs ou modernisés). Le secteur français de la Défense, s'il n'y a pas de hausse de production liée à la guerre pour le moment, s'inquiète sur la contrainte qui pèse sur son industrie. Pour le PDG de MBDA, Eric Béranger, « L'industrie s'adaptera en fonction de ce qu'on lui demandera » et les délais de mobilisation de l'outil industriel « dépendront des moyens qu'on y met ». Les industriels pourront certainement monter en cadence, mais ils auront besoin de prévisibilité, prévient le GICAT (le Groupement des industries de l'armement terrestre). Depuis la parution d'un rapport parlementaire en février 2022, la France prévoit de consentir un effort financier considérable, de plusieurs milliards d'euros, qui s'ajouteraient à la Loi de Programmation Militaire 2019-2025. « Nous percevons une volonté d'investir dans la Défense et c'est une énorme opportunité de renforcer la souveraineté de l'Europe », se félicite Eric Béranger, dont le groupe affiche un chiffre d'affaires en hausse de 16% en 2021 et un carnet de commandes de 17,8 Md€. France, Germany, Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom announced the launch of a multinational project on Next-Generation Rotorcraft Capabilities on 19 November 2020. The project is dedicated to the modernization of existing rotorcraft fleets and is one of NATO's High Visibility Projects (HVP). The project highlights NATO Allies' commitment to maintain a technological edge and to pursue multinational cooperation whenever possible. It aligns with Europe's desire to reduce dependency on U.S. defence equipment. A significant number of medium multi role helicopter capabilities currently operated by Allies will reach the end of their life cycle in the 2035 – 2040 period and beyond, with the subsequent need for replacements. The Next Generation Rotorcraft project aims to develop a solution for these upcoming requirements, leveraging a broad range of recent advances in technology, production methods, as well as operational concepts. Over the coming years, experts from all five nations will cover an exhaustive programme of work, starting with defining a robust Statement of Requirements and a multi-phase cooperation plan. The Defence Ministers of the five Allies signed a Letter of Intent to develop an entirely new helicopter capability.
