Selon l'Institut international de recherche pour la paix de Stockholm (le Sipri), l'Hexagone est devenu le troisième plus gros exportateur d'armes sur la période 2015-2019, assurant 7,9 % des livraisons mondiales.
Seuls les États-Unis (36 %) et la Russie (21 %) font mieux. En revanche, la France dépasse la Chine et l'Allemagne, respectivement troisième et quatrième sur la période précédente (2010-2014). Cela se traduit dans les comptes des entreprises françaises de l'armement, secteur qui totalise 13 % des emplois industriels du pays. En livrant 26 Rafale à l'export l'an passé, Dassault Aviation a vu son chiffre d'affaires bondir de 44 % à 7,3 milliards d'euros. Thales affiche, lui, une rentabilité opérationnelle record de 14 % dans ses activités de défense et sécurité.
Selon le Sipri, la France a livré des armes à 75 États entre 2015 et 2019. L'Égypte, le Qatar et l'Inde sont les trois principaux clients captant 54 % des exportations françaises. "Les livraisons de l'avion de combat Rafale [de Dassault Aviation] à ces trois pays représentaient près d'un quart des exportations d'armes françaises en 2015-2019", détaille le Sipri. Le Moyen-Orient compte pour 52 % des exportations françaises, devant l'Asie et l'Océanie (30 %). Et les pays européens pèsent de plus en plus : ils ont représenté 25 % des exportations en 2018 contre 10 % en moyenne les années précédentes.

Steve Trimble Pratt & Whitney is defining a new engine upgrade option for Block 5 F-35s delivered starting in the 2030s, says Matthew Bromberg, president of Military Engines. The upgrades, the details of which will be defined in about six months, are focused on improvements to the fan and the engine accessories, Bromberg told Aerospace DAILY during a Sept. 17 interview on the sidelines of the Air Force Association's Air, Space and Cyber Conference. The intent is to deliver options for improving thrust by more than 10-12%, reducing fuel consumption by more than 5-6%, increasing vertical lift by about 2% and increasing overall power and thermal management capacity, Bromberg says. Those targets are the proposed baseline improvements advertised for the Growth Option 2.0 upgrade, which remains in discussions for insertion in Block 4.4 aircraft delivered starting in 2028, he says. P&W originally proposed a Growth Option 1.0 upgrade package that offered only thrust and fuel improvements, but no extra capacity for power generation and cooling. “We found it didn't resonate because it didn't have power and thermal management,” Bromberg says. The Growth Option and Engine Enhancement Package upgrades all stem from technologies developed under the Adaptive Engine Technology Program, which is funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory to design a new engine core. By: Jen Judson WASHINGTON — Oshkosh Defense has won a $346 million award to modernize the U.S. Army's fleet of heavy tactical vehicles, according to a March 30 company statement. The company will recapitalize Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks (HEMTT) and Palletized Load System (PLS) trucks with updated technology and safety features. Under the contract, Oshkosh will also build new PLS trailers. Upgrading heavy tactical trucks aligns with the service's need to support operations across multiple domains against near-peer adversaries. “Whether they're hauling rocket launchers and missile defense systems, or transporting mission-critical equipment, the HEMTT and the PLS will continue to be an integral part of the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve heavy vehicle fleets for years to come,” said Pat Williams, the company's vice president and general manager of U.S. Army and Marine Corps programs. “As the military pivots its focus to near-peer adversaries, they can be confident that the [family of heavy tactical vehicles] fleet will continue to serve as a key enabler for combat missions.” Oshkosh has already recapitalized more than 13,700 HEMTTs and 3,400 PLS for the U.S. military since 1995. The company supplies tactical vehicles across the services, including heavy, medium and light. Oshkosh has long held lucrative contracts to supply the services and foreign partners with medium tactical vehicles; it had won a contract to provide a new variant of the vehicle but has yet to begin delivering to the Army. Navistar Defense recently sued the Army over its continued purchase of Oshkosh's family of tactical vehicles without competition, but the U.S. Court of Federal Claims ruled in favor of the service and Oshkosh. Oshkosh also provides the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle to the Army, Marine Corps and Air Force. The vehicle reached full operational capability last year after overcoming some design issues.
